Our top tips for Scottish wedding planning

Happy days! You’re engaged! Congratulations, break out the fizz and celebrate with family and friends!

As well as popping the cork and getting caught up in all the hugs and well wishes you’ll also find yourself fielding questions. All the questions. From “have you set a date yet?” to “where are you getting married?”. You just want to take in the moment and instead you’re feeling like you’ve got to make huge decisions straight away. All before the news has sunk in, it can feel overwhelming.

Fear not, we’re here to hold your hand, to help you through these early stages. Here are our top tips to help you as you set out on your wedding planning journey.

WHAT TYPE OF WEDDING CELEBRATION DO YOU WANT?

This is the most important decision you’ll make when it comes to your wedding day. The answer will form the foundation of your plans and shape all the decisions to come.

Have you always dreamt about getting married in a church? Maybe a civil ceremony fits the bill. Or perhaps a Humanist ceremony is more “you”. Remember, Humanist ceremonies are legal here in Scotland.

Also, take a moment to think about whether your celebrations will be smaller and more intimate, or the bigger the better. It’s important to sit down together and really think about what it is you both want from your wedding day.

SET YOUR BUDGET … AND STICK TO IT!

This might sound like we’re stating the obvious, but having a budget is key to your wedding planning process. So many couples have no idea what to expect to pay, get excited and start booking suppliers willy nilly. Which can end in disaster.

We don’t want you to start married life up to your eyeballs in debt. We’re sure you don’t want that either! So be honest with yourselves about what you can afford. You may have family members who want to contribute or you might decide to have a longer engagement to allow you time to save up. Whatever your financial situation and plan is please do your research before booking suppliers in. That way you have an idea of what you can expect to pay, and when those payments are due.

“MUST HAVES” VS “NICE TO HAVES”

Another thing that’s worth having a good old think about, the non negotiables. For some couples it’s all about the food. For others it’s photography or you might dream about splashing out on ‘the dress’. Maybe having a huge party with an amazing band is key to your day. Whatever it is, whatever priorities you have as a couple, set them out early doors. It’s so easy to get sidetracked when you delve into the wedding world. Keeping that list of must haves close is essential!

Planning a wedding can, at times, feel overwhelming and stressful. There’s no getting around it. However, taking the time out together to make these decisions will make the whole process feel much more manageable and even enjoyable!

DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF WHAT’S IMPORTANT

We’re going to leave you with one final tip. Arguably the most important tip. Don’t lose sight of what the purpose of all this planning is. Yes your wedding day will be hugely important in your lives, but it’s also just one day of your relationship. It marks something even bigger, you starting a whole new exciting chapter of life together. That’s what really matters!
