AN EDINBURGH CITY WEDDING IN BLACK & WHITE

An Edinburgh city wedding was the only choice for childhood sweethearts Robyn + Cammy who got married on the Royal Mile.

“Be brave and take risks. It’ll make your day more special and memorable.”

We Fell In Love With…

Bridesmaids in black, zebra-print sporrans, and a fish supper reception!

Robyn and Cammy made their Edinburgh city wedding one to remember by losing traditions, bucking trends and staying true to their vision.

TELL US ABOUT YOU TWO + YOUR WEDDING JOURNEY

We met when we were 17 and have been inseparable ever since. We’ve grown up together and experienced all our big life events as a couple, which feels very special. Edinburgh means a lot to us as we went to uni there and got our first flat together so, when we got engaged, we knew our ceremony had to be in the city.

We love the Royal Mile, so it was perfect that we could get married right on it. We originally hoped for an August wedding, but the Edinburgh Fringe, and the crowds, made us reconsider. We settled on October hoping it would be a little cooler for Cammy in his kilt – spoiler alert it wasn’t!

Robyn had always wanted bridesmaids wearing black, which was how our black and white theme came about. We thought it would be a modern twist in our historic venues.

Robyn and her mum planned a lot of the wedding together, along with lots of support from family. The only challenge was the more unconventional bits of the wedding, and convincing those around us to stay on board with our vision.

We won’t lie, we took some risks and bucked some long standing traditions and trends but it all worked out and those turned out to be the things that made the day more memorable.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR OUTFITS

The full wedding party wore black and white to match our wedding theme.

Whilst researching photographers we saw a picture of a groom wearing a black kilt, one which Robyn had been picturing in her head! We knew it was perfect as soon as we visited Highland Kilt Connections, Bathgate. While we were there we saw the zebra print sporrans that our groomsmen ended up wearing. Cammy opted for the all black sporran and Finlay, Robyn’s brother and Bridesman, also went for the all black.

Robyn asked her bridesmaids to find their own dresses and accessories, that way they’d all be wearing something they loved and felt good in. She also decided to have different flowers for each bridesmaid. They all held one individual flower and Robyn’s bouquet was made up of all the flowers mixed together. Our florist knew exactly what to do when we suggested it to her.

Robyn originally wanted to wear a white suit. We were told that Pan Pan Bridal was closing down so Robyn and her mum decided to go and try on dresses with no expectations. The first dress Robyn tried on was the dress. It was everything she said she didn’t want, but she fell in love!

Lei, Pan Pan Bridal’s owner, helped create the rest of the vision along with Dawn from Talking Heads and Jennifer Ross who did makeup.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CEREMONY

We had very different visions for our wedding, so we came to a compromise. A smaller, more intimate ceremony followed by a larger reception.

We held our ceremony at Edinburgh City Chambers, in front of 26 of our nearest and dearest. It was small, intimate and felt like a really personal and connected moment during what was a very busy day.

Our siblings signed the register and did readings for us. We’re all very close so it was lovely to have them so involved in our ceremony, we didn’t expect them to be quite so emotional though! We didn’t feel the need to add any extra decor to the ceremony suite, it was already perfect. We just had some wedding newspapers on each seat for our guests to read. These also acted as the order of the day and had a few fun games inside.

Our content creator, Jane from Wedimedia, captured loads of footage of our ceremony. We also had unbelievable photographers, The Gibsons.

Our second venue needed to be much bigger, so Linlithgow Burgh Halls was ideal. It’s close to our home and somewhere we spend a lot of time walking our dog. We had access to multiple rooms and we were able to decorate them just as we wanted, with a long dining table for our meal and a room for us to party the night away after.

We needed a way to travel from the Royal Mile to Linlithgow. The idea of using the train was  initially a joke between us. However, the more we thought about it, the more it made sense! We could be with our guests and get the party started on the way. We took a gamble (kept our fingers crossed for no travel disruptions) and it paid off. We took over a carriage and made sure everyone had food and drink for the journey. It was so much fun and the perfect way for everyone to let their hair down and move straight into our party.

TELL US ABOUT THE RECEPTION

We were keen for all our guests to feel relaxed and part of the day from start to finish. Our family and friends love a party so we gave them all access to the playlist we’d be sending to our DJ. This gave Nick from Wedding DJ Scotland a really good idea of what people wanted to hear. The playlist was purely inspirational as we knew he would nail it and create a great party atmosphere, from singalong classics to club bangers.

Our food choice was easy, a chippy tea. Something everyone enjoys! Corvies, one of the best chippies in the country, was just down the road so we asked if they would cater for us. They were absolutely fantastic and put on an absolute feast. This was arguably the best decision we made for the whole day.

Our food was topped off with the most delicious cake made by one of Robyn’s work colleagues, Sparkles Cake Company. It was vanilla sponge with white chocolate icing, so good we kept a huge chunk to take home to enjoy for a few more days!

ANY LESSONS LEARNED OR ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

We wanted something different for our wedding, something against the norm. Our challenge was to convince others that our vision was right for us and that it would work. We had to dig deep as a couple to be able to stick to our guns. Ultimately our unusual ideas and going against the grain made our wedding day even more memorable for everyone.

Our best advice would be to think long and hard about what you want, then be brave and go for it. Having a day that’s truly your vision will make it even more special and memorable than sticking to tradition.
