We Fell In Love With…
City chic, vintage vehicles, a super personal ceremony and a playlist two and a half years in the making!
Mark and Sophie wanted to celebrate the city where they fell in love so choosing Glasgow University Chapel and The Engine Works was a no brainer. We love how they embraced the industrial vibes of the iconic warehouse venue but made it personal to them by having a team of talented friends making sure their big day went off with a bang!
Read on to see all the super cool inspiration and don’t forget to stay until the end to get some sound advice from this gorgeous couple.

TELL US ABOUT YOU TWO + YOUR WEDDING JOURNEY

We met on Tinder (Sophie’s one and only Tinder date). Mark worked at Glasgow University and Sophie was a graduate so it was a no-brainer to get married in the beautiful University of Glasgow Chapel. We wanted everything to be central to Glasgow because it’s easy to get to but also to celebrate the city in which we met and fell in love!
Initially, we wanted to get married in September, but realised it was fresher’s week at the Uni which might have had an impact on the decor! We (accidentally) got married on Sophie’s mum and dad’s wedding anniversary instead.
Decor wise, we went for a leafy green/foliage with a slightly industrial feel. Simple, almost Autumnal colours were the vibe. We used old olive cans and olive sprigs as our place settings.
The wedding coordinator at the Engine Works was great, they really put our minds at ease about how everything would come together with our suppliers, and took a lot of stress out of the day.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR OUTFITS

I wasn’t keen to do the full ‘say yes to the dress moment’ but I knew what I wanted and I didn’t want to be overly influenced by other people and swept up in the moment, ending up with something that wasn’t ‘me’. I had seen my dress online a while ago and knew it was the one, simple, slinky.
Initially, I hadn’t planned on wearing much jewellery or a veil, but that all changed when I saw the Christopher Kane veil I knew I had to see it with the dress and it was perfect. For shoes, they had to be chunky and re-wearable. Something pearly/ super formal just wasn’t me and I’ve worn them to two other weddings since!
My bridesmaids wore dresses from Reformation. I knew I didn’t want them to wear something that was picked for them, or for them to be in matching dresses. I love their designs so just said to pick anything from there.
Mark was always keen to wear trews rather than a kilt. We liked the style being a bit more simple and streamlined in general. Mark and his dad wore the Campbell Tartan, and Sophie’s family wore the Mowatt Tartan (Sophie’s grandmother’s name). The groomsmen wore kilts, as that was their preference. The contrast with the family members in trews was lovely!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CEREMONY

We had a humanist ceremony. John (our celebrant) was just perfect. We wanted it simple, heartfelt, not too long, or overly ‘jokey’. He hit the nail on the head with the right combination of tears and laughter! It felt super personal.
We didn’t decorate Glasgow University Chapel, it did the work itself and looked unreal in the wonderful photos by Joy Story.
TELL US ABOUT THE RECEPTION

The food provided by Lazy Sunday was incredible. We started with a mix of sharing charcuterie, fish, and vegetarian platters to get the chat going at the trestle table set up. The plated mains offering was an amazing beef cheek, seabass, and ravioli. One of our friends, Kerry, made an amazing cake and we served this with boozy cream and berries.
Our favours were provided by our friend, Mhairi, who makes the world’s best tablet along with bottles of Glaswegin. Another one of our friends, Rachel, was the Master of Ceremonies. Along with Jack (our wonderful piper) who brought everything together.
Our reception drinks playlist was carefully curated over the course of two and half years(!), and was honestly one of our most important factors. Our best men, Graham and Simon, provided wonderful, heartfelt, and funny speeches. Our band Aurora played an unreal set, followed by Chris who DJ’d until the end.
Big shoutout to Engine Works who let us take the leftover wine to the after-party kindly hosted by our friend Craig! It was an absolute party of a day and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
ANY LESSONS LEARNED OR ADVICE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?

Booking somewhere like the Engine Works as a ‘dry hire’ requires much more planning / co-ordinating than we initially thought, as you are responsible for picking / curating / organising all your own suppliers.
Don’t get hung up on what other people want. We panicked about a having child-free wedding and food choices for dinner, but it’s YOUR day.
