Situated in the beautiful countryside of East Lothian, Dunglass Estate is a truly wonderful place. With stunning grounds and sea views, it also hosts a historic church, luxury pavilion, and onsite accommodation for 28. Not to mention a rather special Honeymoon Treehouse! We caught up with events manager, Claire Weir to get the behind-the-scenes chat on this exclusive use venue.
It’s no secret that Dunglass stole our hearts. What’s your favourite thing about the estate?
Arriving to work gives me goosebumps, coming up the windy drive and the church slowly appears from between the trees. Whether it’s basking in the morning sunshine or sitting under a grey cloud its undeniably breath taking. The Walled Garden also has a special place in my heart. The calm and serenity it offers is indescribable, it almost feels like a step back in time.
And what do you love most about Dunglass weddings?
How different they all are, the church can be utilised in several ways for the ceremony and our Pavilion offers a variety of different options for table layouts, giving our couples control over the look for their big day. The Dunglass team are on hand to guide and support from start to finish, there’s not much we haven’t seen so we know what works well and what doesn’t.
Any venue highlights or favourite moments you’d like to share?
It would be rude not to mention our Honeymoon Treehouse. Set in its own private area of the estate with our four alpacas as neighbours. The treehouse is a cosy little bolt hole for our couples, offering panoramic views of the estate which can be enjoyed from the hot tub.
Seeing the full renovation of Dunglass has been pretty special. As I arrived for my first day on the job as Events Manager we didn’t even have a venue, it was a pile of top soil. Being able to see the transformation of Dunglass as it happened daily was incredible and I’ll never forget walking into the completed Pavilion for the first time.
If we were to go behind the scenes for a day, what might we be surprised to discover?
Just how varied our ‘To Do’ lists can be. Our day will start with clearing inboxes but by lunchtime we could be at the bottom of a hot tub cleaning it out, mid-afternoon could be meetings and appointments and by tea time we could be rescuing escaped animals within the fields. No two days are the same but being part of a small, family run team makes it all the more exciting.
What has the past year taught you?
Just how precious family and friends are. Weddings pre-Covid were great but now they’re AMAZING. Being able to watch wedding guests in our Pavilion having the time of their lives because they’ve been asked to share our couples special day is something you can’t put into words. I will never tire from seeing tears of joy, smiles as big as the Cheshire cat or the couple looking at each other with nothing but love in their eyes as they take to the floor for their first dance.
Anything else you’d like our readers to know?
We’re only 40 minutes from Edinburgh. The estate has its own microclimate as it’s close to Sunny Dunny (Dunbar). We’ve added a stretch tent to our outdoor BBQ area, making it suitable for all seasons. We’ve created an intimate wedding package for up to 28 people which coincides with the accommodation available on site. Our fire-pit is a mega cosy spot, ideal for toasting marshmallows as the sun goes down
