A STYLISH, SMALL WEDDING AT STONEHAVEN HARBOUR

Like many couples, Penny and Cameron had to pivot when Covid rained on their original wedding plans. They embraced the opportunity to have an intimate, outdoor micro wedding in Penny’s hometown on the Aberdeenshire coast.

We adore the laidback vibe, gorgeous blooms and that dreamy Alice and Olive 60s style sequin mini dress!

How did you two meet?

We met on a night out in Aberdeen at Club Tropicana (the drinks were definitely not free, unfortunately.) Cameron came to my rescue and assisted me in getting away from a chatty stranger at the bar and the rest is history!

What inspired your wedding plans?

Originally we had planned a larger wedding a bit further away from home but once the pandemic hit we realised what was really important to us.

We were truly grateful to have our immediate family and closest friends join us in my hometown of Stonehaven. The harbour is my favourite place and having our ceremony out on the pier meant so much! Although we were restricted by the guidelines, we are so glad we had to keep it local and intimate.

Our Humanist celebrate, Sheila Lawtie was so kind and funny, she told our story perfectly!

Tell us about your venue…

The Marine Hotel looks directly out onto the stunning harbour and serves delicious food and a huge selection of beer! It was a no-brainer to hold our reception there.

We love your outfits! Tell us more…

I wanted my outfit to match our wedding style – relaxed and less formal so I opted for a short dress. After much searching I found the perfect one! A white mini dress with subtle sequins. I added a pop of colour with my pink velvet shoes and wore my great-auntie’s fabulous coat to keep me warm on the chilly pier!

Cameron wore his family McHardy tartan kilt with a green tweed jacket.

How did you choose your photographer?

Jen was recommended to us by a couple of of photographers who were unavailable for our date, and without being rude we are so glad they were already booked! Jen’s photos are so natural and captured our emotions perfectly. Not to mention she is the nicest person and made us all feel so at ease!

Were there any challenges along the way?

My bridal party and I were meant to travel by boat to the ceremony, but due to a storm coming the harbour boom had to be closed meaning this wasn’t going to happen! This did, however, mean I had lots more time to relax and enjoy the morning with the girls – every cloud!

We, like many other couples, had to reschedule our date and venue due to Covid. We ended up with a completely different day to what we had originally imagined, but it was honestly so perfect and we wouldn’t have changed a thing (well maybe slightly warmer weather would have been a bonus…).

Tell us more about your florist…

Kim creates the most beautiful oversized bouquets and she did not disappoint! She absolutely nailed the brief. I definitely think my bouquet made my look.

Did you manage to stick to your budget?

One benefit from having a restricted number of guests was definitely the cost. We wanted to put a little extra money towards the meal and drinks because of this but we were still fortunate to come under our budget.

Any advice?

Don’t stress, it will all come together on the day! And even if it doesn’t you’ll be having too much of a good time to notice.

Honeymoon or minimoon?

We stayed local to Aberdeenshire and had our minimoon at Dounside House. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind. The surrounding gardens are just beautiful and the food is so delicious. Would highly recommend a getaway there.

What’s the one moment you will always remember?

After the ceremony, Cameron and I had some photos taken sitting on my dad’s boat in the harbour. It was lovely to enjoy a couple of minutes just between the two of us and appreciate that we were finally married.
