Why should you have a Scottish castle wedding?

You can’t move in Scotland without tripping over a castle or two. Ok, we may be exaggerating a little, but our ancestors did love a castle, and they’re all pretty damn cool too. Read on for our take on why a Scottish castle wedding is a great idea.

THE BEST SCOTTISH WEDDING VENUES

Scotland has the best wedding venues around. It’s a fact. Sure we have your more traditional hotels and town hall style venues but where we really excel is in the more unusual wedding venue.

From super cool industrial spaces to blank canvas barns and pubs we’ve got it covered. You can even get married on the beach or atop a mountain. The choices are endless so it’s easy to get a tad overwhelmed when you’re trying to nail down a wedding venue.

For this blog we’re going to keep things specific and do a deep dive into one of Scotland’s most popular venue types. The castle.

There are historic ruins and beautifully restored castles all over the Scottish countryside. If you decide that a castle is where you’d like to tie the knot then you’re going to be spoilt for choice. Do you fancy standing amidst some ruins to say your vows? Or will you be pledging your love to each other in sumptuous surroundings?

A BIT OF SCOTTISH HISTORY

Castles are the supporting characters in those Scottish myths and legends you grew up hearing. They were the homes of clan chiefs and housed many a king and queen.

It can be pretty mind blowing to see castles dating back as far as the 13th century. Especially for couples travelling to Scotland from abroad. When your home country doesn’t have such a rich and storied history it can be hard to get your head around the centuries of romance, power grabs, battles and, well, just general day to day life that has taken place hundreds of years previous. To feel that you two are now a part of that castle’s rich history is amazing.

When it comes to a castle wedding you’re adding a level of history and grandeur that other venues just can’t compete with.

RIDICULOUSLY ROMANTIC

Fairy tales, knights, kings and queens of ye olde days… we all love a good story from the past and castles played a big part in Scottish history. Think of castles and they conjure up images of knights riding out to battle, dances in giant feasting halls and glittering golden throne rooms. They’re rich in history and hold such pull over our imaginations, belonging to a time we have never experienced but hear so much about.

They are otherworldly and eternal. Much like love. With all that in mind you can see why castles are the epitome of romance for many couples.

BREATHTAKING BACKDROPS

Nothing beats that distinctive silhouette of turrets, towers and parapets. And inside castles are rather cool as well, with tapestries, great halls, staircases and maybe even a throne or two. Add in walled gardens, moats and a drawbridge and you’ve got one amazing venue!

Your photographer will thank you for the incredible grounds too, whatever the season. Vibrant colours in the spring and summer, beautiful fiery bursts of autumnal reds and golds and impressive magical winter wonderlands.

THE PRACTICAL PARTS

Now we’ve waxed lyrical about castles – the romance, the panoramic views, the breathtaking vistas – let’s get a bit more practical. Think guest numbers, flexibility and exclusivity. There’s something really special about knowing your wedding venue is off limits to others. No one wants the world and their dog gawping at you as you say your vows or pose for post ceremony portraits. With an exclusive use venue you know that you’ll be celebrating your wedding with just your nearest and dearest.

And finally, the weather. Or, more specifically, Scottish weather. It’s unpredictable and, let’s face it, we’re likely to experience at least a couple of seasons in a day. This is where the size and flexibility of a castle venue really comes into its own. Within those walls you’ll find many ceremony options, including indoors and outdoors. We don’t envy you having to decide where to tie the knot!

What are our faves, I hear you ask?? Here are some of our best-loved castle venues in Scotland (in no particular order!)
