Cosy Barn Micro Wedding at The Cow Shed Crail

Global pandemic = two wedding days! Featuring an embroidered dress, luxe styling and donut cake, Becky and Rowley’s cosy barn micro wedding has stolen our hearts. Even a named storm couldn’t spoil the fun!

How did you two meet?

We met on Tinder! We had both recently moved to London and set our “range” on the app to 1km, so we’re very lucky we lived so close together otherwise we wouldn’t have found each other!

What inspired your wedding plans?

My fiancé (Rowley) and I were due to have a big 160+ person Scottish celebration on 10/10/2020, however, over the summer it became clear that this would not be possible.

Planning a wedding in normal times can be a lot to deal with, but with daily rule changes, family stuck abroad, and the constant threat of self-isolation, it sometimes felt like it just wasn’t going to happen.

After months of agonising over what to do, we made the heart-breaking decision to postpone our main wedding celebration to summer 2021. Whilst the party, white dress, speeches, dancing, etc. may have been postponed, we simply couldn’t wait to get married, so with just one week to go, we firmed up arrangements and kept our fingers crossed for our big day.

In the end, it was perfect – even Storm Alex couldn’t dampen our day! After the previous 8 months, having 18 of our close friends and family (plus a few more on Zoom!) with us to watch us get married meant so much and made the day even more special.

I read WFIL and love your Instagram page as well. I had already found my suppliers when I found you, but it was super reassuring to see some of them (e.g. Gloam) recommended by you. I felt like I had made the right decision.

We heart your venue big time!

Our venue (The Cow Shed, Crail), is a wonderful converted barn, with crumbly walls, gorgeous natural light and industrial fixtures.

We loved the fact we could push the boat out with this wedding – we could be much more creative, and still have something more traditional in 2021. Our ceremony room had a warm gorgeous fire, and instead of seats we got lots of sofas and armchairs – it felt very intimate, like a cosy living room. We printed out family wedding photos from both of our families going as far back as great grandparents, which added to this relaxed living room feel. We went for more boho, wildflowers and pampas grass.

I originally found out about the venue online, as I was Googling venues near my home (I am from the next village over). I started to follow them on Instagram and I fell in love with the light in the place. We looked at some other barn conversions, but a lot of them felt dark. The Cow Shed team have done an amazing job at renovating the place, it feels so light and bright.

We love your outfits! Tell us more…

I opted for a crown and colourful dress – something I would never have done if I had only one wedding! One of the advantages of having two celebrations is two dresses!

Whilst I have gone much more traditional for our main celebration, I loved that this gave me the opportunity to do something a bit different. I was drawn to this dress because of the stunning, colourful embroidery and boho feel to it. I was nervous ordering it online, but it fitted like a glove and was perfect in every way. I only ordered it three weeks before the wedding, so it felt like it was meant to be!

I wore a fabulous crown from Rose Red Accessories (I found them on Etsy), and velvet red heels with a tie strap from Harriet Wilde Shoes.

Rowley wore a lovely dark grey tweed three-piece suit. As an Englishman he was apprehensive about wearing a kilt but was keen to give a nod to Scotland, so decided on tweed.

With the main bridesmaids’ dresses postponed to next year, we bought embroidered navy dresses from ASOS, and the groomsmen wore their own suits this year.

Claire Fleck is just wonderful! She has an incredible ability to make everyone feel at ease, and then capture the most wonderful relaxed moments of the day.

Neither I nor Rowley are comfortable in front of a camera, but she made it so much fun. We were drawn to her relaxed, intimate style – the opposite of formal wedding photos and exactly what we wanted.

Tell us about your flowers…

We had actually booked a different florist for our main wedding celebration that is postponed to 2021. Our main florist wasn’t available for our micro wedding this year, so we ended up asking Gloam (who were already helping with styling). They were wonderful (as always!), they offered great advice about what would work with my dress, and the flowers had such impact on the day and in the photos. We wanted my bouquet to look like I had just scooped up some flowers in a wild meadow – it was perfect!

How did Covid impact your plans?

Where to start…. It was really very difficult to manage everything given the (what felt like daily) changes going on. We decided to postpone the main celebration in early August, then confirmed the micro wedding for the original date in early September (about one month before). However, as October came we saw things going downhill again so with a week to go, we moved our wedding last minute from the 10th to 3rd.

Turns out we made the right decision in the end as Rowley’s family would have been in lockdown in Wales on the 10th! The 3rd was also Storm Alex, the wettest UK day on record. Beforehand a stormy wedding would have been my nightmare, but it simply didn’t matter on the day! If anything it made the venue feel cosier and we got some amazing photos with umbrellas. I wouldn’t have changed it one bit!

Did you manage to stick to your budget?

The budget was a tricky one as we didn’t budget to have two celebrations! We have stuck to our budget for the main celebration, but this one was on top of that, but well worth the money. We are very lucky to have some amazing family to help us out!

Any advice?


I think what I have learnt planning this wedding (particularly during Covid), is that you can plan as much as you like, but in the end, it is best to go with the flow on the day. At the end of the day, the small stuff doesn’t matter!

Honeymoon or minimoon?

Both! We opted to have a small weekend away this year after the ceremony and will go abroad for an adventure next year. I work for a luxury travel company so have some big plans!

What’s the one moment you’ll always remember?

The day before the wedding Rowley asked me if we would be able to just take ourselves off for 15 minutes after the ceremony to have just to ourselves. I wasn’t sure if we would be able to, but it was important to him so we did. I cannot recommend it enough – it was so wonderful to have a wee moment to ourselves.
