Rainbow socks and rugby meet in an Edinburgh Old Town wedding

FEATURING

LGBTQ Wedding at The Caves Edinburgh - Elemental Photography 1

In a rare event for these times, Kirsty and Aimie were married on their original wedding date! Inspired by “a love of Scotland, being geeks and rubgy”, they tied the knot in one of Edinburgh’s best-loved music venues, The Caves.

Aimie and Kirsty plan to hold their after party on their first wedding anniversary, next spring. Sounds like a great idea to us!

Where did your love story begin?

We met through our mutual friend Graeme about 7 years ago. In fact, Graeme introduced Kirsty to Aimie just before Aimie went to New Zealand for 6 months. After Aimie was back in Scotland, we got to know each other as friends through meeting friends in the pub for rugby.

Two stints of Can’t Stop the Serenity, organising charity screenings of the film Serenity. There was Tough Mudder in June 2016 as well as a trip to Stornoway with friends for Hebcelt.

We made it official in June 2017 but had been dancing round the idea of becoming a couple for a few months. It was a big step to take as we were such good friends, and we had shared friendships. When we did tell people that we were a couple quite a few folks weren’t surprised as they assumed we had been together for a while.

What inspired your wedding plans?

A love of Scotland, being geeks and rubgy. Our theme, if we were to give it one, was Scotland rugby team. The tables were named after different players/rugby families. From the top table being ‘Weir’, to Hastings, Laidlaw and Hogg. The save the dates had been lego characters with ‘The Vennel’ in Edinburgh as the backdrop.

Tell us about your venue…

We chose The Caves in Edinburgh as our venue and it was the last of the venues in Edinburgh we had chosen to go and see back in 2018. It was totally the two inbuilt bars which swung it! Well, partly that. We both knew the venue from gigs and Aimie through graduation ceremonies with Edinburgh University. The venue is old Edinburgh and very us when we thought about it.

The venue as a whole and all of the suppliers we chose were great. City Brides were also brilliant. Our wedding party wasn’t the smallest and they were great with everyone, and recognised if people were nervous. Including our niece who was treated like a princess.

Were there any challenges along the way?

The pandemic! A global pandemic wasn’t on the cards when we got engaged and decided to set the date for May 2021. But we still managed to continue arranging everything in the moments where things briefly opened back up.

Any advice?

Try not to stress, which is easier said than done. It’s your day and it’ll go how you allow it to go. Just enjoy your day. The people who are able to be with you, want to be there to share the day with you.

Under the current circumstances, you may not get the day you originally wanted but it’s about you and your partner getting married. We decided to hold our reception at a later date in the hope that we can have everyone there with us on our first anniversary.

Honeymoon or minimoon?

Eventually there will be a honeymoon but we’ll have a minimoon before that when we get the chance. This will likely be somewhere in the north of Scotland at a yet to be decided location. But there are ideas and plans in the works for it.

We hadn’t booked anything yet because of the pandemic as we didn’t know how things would go with that and didn’t want to keep having to move it.

What’s the one moment you’ll always remember?

The very not ‘wedding proposal’ proposal. We were chatting about everything and anything while on a date night. It just so happened that we casually agreed to get married at the start of the night (we were sober). A no pressure proposal.

So much to love! Thank you for sharing your wedding story with us Kirsty & Aimie. x
