FEATURING

It was fourth time lucky for NHS workers Amy and Alfie, who spent their original wedding date working on the Covid wards and for Track & Trace. They were married in their garden in Glasgow, just two hectic weeks after moving in to their new home.

Their wedding is a beautiful reminder that all you really need is to be marrying the one you love.

What inspired your wedding plans?

As usual, necessity was the mother of invention. We had planned a dream wedding down in Gloucestershire in June with 100 guests, we had looked through endless Pinterest boards and forced ourselves to have opinions about 10,000 different things.

When that got cancelled, along with another two iterations, it felt like things were doomed. But to some degree, the cancellations and general uncertainty were helpful. It clarified what elements we felt were vital, and which bits we could do without. And made us realise one certain thing – we couldn’t wait to be married.

We had just bought our first house in a new city and we realised that a small ceremony with just family around us would be the perfect way to mark new beginnings. From there it was just a case of finding vendors that were local and putting our trust in them. Gone were colour schemes, seating plans and menu choices, instead, we spent our time finding businesses we liked and just telling them to do what they do best. We spent most of the day marvelling at the creativity, craft and ingenuity of everyone involved.

Tell us about your venue…

Our garden at home! Alfie grew up in Scotland, so we’d planned to move here for a while. Alfie got accepted onto a training scheme here and Amy found a job a little after. Getting married here was the best way to cement it as home after a year of uncertainty. We had just moved into our house 16 days earlier, which was a blur of painting and trips to garden centres to try and fill out the garden.

We love your outfits! Tell us more…

I wore a simple ivory gown with intricate beading. It was one of the first I tried on and I couldn’t get it out of my head! I wore my trusty Birkenstocks all day.

Alfie wore a tailor-made suit from Bangkok with opal cufflinks from his aunt and uncle in Australia.

Your photos are beautiful!

We stumbled upon Sarah at Joy Story whilst googling local photographers. We entered a competition she was running for NHS workers, but by then had totally fallen for her relaxed natural style of photography. So when a much more worthy couple won we were quick to get in touch with her! The photos reflect the day and us perfectly, we can’t stop reliving it all through them.

I’m awfully camera shy and we do NOT have pictures of us! Sarah was so unobtrusive and put us instantly at ease. She captured the essence of the day, and us so perfectly. It’s crazy to think we only met in person on the day itself as it felt like she must have known us for years.

Tell us more about the flowers…

Lauren at Pretty Little Petals was wonderful – we were a bit clueless about flowers, we gave her a vague brief and she completely blew us all out of the water with her beautiful arrangements.

Anyone else you’d like to give a shoutout?

The Wayfaring Chef were also brilliant – they created the most elegant extravaganza of an afternoon tea. They were also SO kind when our plans had to change due to new restrictions and bent over backwards to give us what we wanted whilst still being covid-safe.

Were there any challenges along the way?

COVID-19 was the biggy. We were meant to be on a year working and travelling around NZ, which we swiftly shortened to be able to get back home. The first wedding day was meant to be in June. We cancelled when it was obvious this wasn’t going to happen. So our original wedding date was not very romantic – Alfie was working on the Covid wards and I was working for Track & Trace! A few days before our actual wedding the Covid regulations changed and had to make some last-minute adjustments but thankfully all our vendors were so supportive and kind they made this as easy as possible.

Did you manage to stick to your budget?

Under budget. Renovating our bathroom with the saved pennies.

Any advice?

Being married is ace. You don’t need anything more than the right person standing in front of you. Trust your vendors, they know what they’re doing and will take the stress away if you let them. Remember they do more weddings than you (hopefully).

Honeymoon or minimoon?

Zeromoon. We were lucky enough to have some time in Aus/NZ just pre-COVID so did pretty well!

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

Laughter.
