A Joy-Filled Micro Wedding at The Bothy, Glasgow
FEATURING
Ready for another hit of micro wedding joy?! We thought so! After Covid rained on their travel plans last spring, Paul proposed to Morven over a ramen dinner at home instead.
They arranged their wee Glasgow wedding – against a backdrop of changing restrictions! – in just three months and also plan to celebrate with a big party, once we’re on the other side. So much to love and be inspired by here!
How did you two meet?
We met online, we set up a date but I cancelled with Paul with only a few days to go. A month or so later Paul messaged me again and we had cocktails in the Merchant City. It was a great first date!
What inspired your wedding plans.
In April 2020, we were supposed to fly to Japan but due to Covid, our trip was cancelled. So Paul made me a ramen dinner and proposed at home!
We felt with the pandemic there was no way of knowing when we could have all our friends and family together again, I have a large family of cousins, aunts and uncles that I’m close to. We just couldn’t wait to be married so decided to start planning a small wedding and plan a larger party with all our friends and family later. We planned our wedding at the end of July for October, in around three months!
Tell us about your venue…
We wanted it to be warm, rustic and romantic. The Bothy’s private room is already very cosy and rustic and I imagined lots of greenery and candles for our day when we visited. I am quite a crafty person so I wanted to make some of the decor and make it personal to us. We loved having the day all in one place so everyone could relax whilst we took photos in the West End.
I had visited the Bothy before with nights out with family and friends, but didn’t realise it could be hired out for weddings until we started planning. I found lots of articles on Scottish wedding blogs and websites, and the pictures of it decorated for a wedding just looked stunning. We visited for dinner and loved the food and knew our guests would too. We liked that it was a small intimate room where we could relax with our families after the ceremony.
Our celebrant Christopher Griffin of Fuze Ceremonies was amazing at helping us plan our ceremony. We wanted a warm, and lighthearted ceremony and when we had a chat with Christopher via video call, he was so friendly and we had a great feeling about him.
We thought about streaming our wedding to family and friends, but decided to buy a small HD camera and will edit the footage ourselves. We made a wedding website for family and friends to watch a sneak peek and will put the rest of the video up when I’ve had time to edit it all!
We love your outfits! Tell us more…
I always imagined wearing a dress similar to Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, a shorter tea-length gown with tulle. But when I tried on a shorter dress it just didn’t feel right. My dress was the last one of five I tried on and I loved that it felt very classic and romantic with the long tulle fabric. We added on the belt and the sleeves when I first tried it on and after that, I knew it was the one! It was very comfortable too.
I spent lots of time on Etsy looking at amazing pieces of jewellery and went for items that complemented the pearl detail on my belt. And my shoes were from Rainbow Club.
Paul’s kilt was a tartan called Highland Storm. Paul and his brother went to Slaters to find a kilt for them both and we loved that the Highland Storm grey tartan had a similar style in blue called Highland Sky. Paul wore the grey tartan with a grey jacket and his brother wore the blue tartan with a navy jacket. Paul and Mark’s kilts subtly matched each other and looked great together.
Paul accessories including his shoes, sporran, tie, etc. all came from Slaters. His sister, Debbie gifted him the kilt pin and cufflinks, and I purchased his Sgian dubh. I made Paul’s face mask from a piece of tartan that matched his Kilt.
And we hear you got creative when it came to choosing a dress for your best gal?
My best friend, Susan was my Maid of Honour and we just ordered a bunch of dresses that we loved on ASOS as a starting point to see what colours and styles we liked.
We had a socially distant fashion show at Susan’s when they all arrived and loved the dress we chose for the day. We liked that it had pleats similar to my dress and had lovely button detail on the back too. The mauve colour just looked stunning on Susan and went with the blush pink and ivory tone of the wedding theme.
How did you choose your photographer?
Jacqui from Chic Photo was amazing. I noticed her on Instagram and she mentioned a micro wedding package. I looked at her website and the pictures not only looked gorgeous but all the couples just looked so relaxed and that’s what we wanted.
Looking back on our ceremony and moments after, we actually forgot Jacqui was there! She just seemed to blend in and she captured the most amazing moments for us.
We were a bit apprehensive about taking pictures in the busy West End at first, but on the day Jacqui made us feel so comfortable. It was like a pal was taking photos of you. When we got the photos back I got a bit emotional as they were just so beautiful! The perfect reminder of our day.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed she’s free when we have a reception in a year or two!
Tell us about your flowers…
I’d followed Mud Urban Flowers on social media for ages and always loved their beautiful wedding flowers, so when it came to wedding planning, they were one of the first people I contacted!
We emailed back and forth about the wedding theme/colours and flowers which would be in season. I ordered my bouquets and also three jam jars with flowers to go with our rustic look. I asked for roses, hydrangeas and eucalyptus in blush pinks and ivory, and they just looked fantastic on the day.
Your cake looks delicious, tell us more…
I made it myself! I’ve made family cakes for years so wanted to make my own. It was a semi-naked four layer chocolate cake with salted caramel buttercream. The wooden cake topper was from Etsy seller, Queenofkeepsakes.
I also purchased materials from Paperchase & Hobbycraft and made invites and the Wedding signage myself.
What was your first dance song?
We didn’t have a proper first dance because of the covid rules for dancing, but our first dance is Stevie Wonder’s “I believe (when I fall in love it will be forever)”.
We love the slow beginning and then the funky beats at the end! Can’t wait to dance all over again to it with family and friends.
Were there any challenges along the way (we suspect we know the answer to this one…)?
My mum was disappointed that I couldn’t get ready at her house due to the restrictions, which changed with only a few weeks to go, and I didn’t want to get ready at home with Paul as he’d see my dress! So Paul and I decided to treat ourselves and stay in Hotel Du Vin the night before and the night of the wedding. It was worth every penny! We felt so relaxed in a beautiful room. And my MUA/hair stylist, Lee (Blushed Bride) was so accommodating when the plans had to change.
A week before the wedding, restrictions meant that all restaurants had to close. We did wonder at that point if our wedding would go ahead but luckily the Bothy told us they were allowed to open for weddings previously booked and opened just for us on the day. An hour before the wedding, Nicola Sturgeon changed the guidance on masks for couples getting married indoors! I was frantically texting Paul and his brother (our best man) to inform the celebrant so we didn’t have to wear our masks!
As the music had to be very quiet, I couldn’t hear it to tell me to walk down the aisle, I just heard someone saying “go!” and rushed down the aisle! I laughed when I got to the room and finally saw all of our guests properly.
Any advice?
The day went by so quickly! No wedding at the moment goes smoothly, so we tried to roll with the punches as much as we could and just focus on getting married.
Honeymoon or minimoon?
Minimoon at RiverBed lodges in Glencoe. It was very romantic and we would go back again in a heartbeat! We are hoping that when we reschedule our trip to Japan in the future, that will be our honeymoon.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
Lots of smiling and laughing. I thought I would get emotional and cry during the ceremony but all I remember is smiling so much my cheeks were hurting!
With all the rules and restrictions at the moment, to have one day with our close family, to smile and laugh together was priceless.
This hit us right in the feels. Is anyone else falling head over heels with micro weddings? x
