A Glasgow Back Garden Micro Wedding
FEATURING
When Covid-19 restrictions meant they couldn’t proceed with the big church wedding they had planned, Laura and Andrew decided to Plan B it, rather than wait. They were married in their friend’s back garden in Glasgow this summer, followed by a broadcast worship service at their church, with the wedding toast on Zoom. A very 2020 wedding indeed!
How did you two meet?
We had been going along to the Tron Church in Glasgow for a number of years and were friends for some time, then we got together in 2018. After two-and-a-bit years together we got engaged last Christmas – we had no idea what was coming when we first got engaged!
From Plan A to Plan B – tell us about your wedding journey…
We love Glasgow a lot! It’s where we met, where we’ve made our home (for now..) and it’s where our church family is. We had initially planned a big ceremony with all of our friends and family in attendance at our church, followed by a hog roast and a ceilidh, but sadly Covid-19 put an end to the hopes of that!
We know many people who, if faced with similar circumstances, would choose to delay the wedding in order to have the big celebrations as planned. But for us as Christians, the most important thing was to be married. The wedding day is only the beginning of our marriage, so we preferred to do it in a more low key way, rather than wait.
After much uncertainty and upheaval, and having to change dates in order to have the paperwork sorted with the Registry Office in time, we were able to get married in our friend’s back garden, with a minimal number of attendees, and have a broadcast worship service at our church with the wedding toast on Zoom.
Our friend Gloria made our invites – she kept it botanical and floral, it was very in keeping with the wedding day!
We didn’t have a first dance but we walked in to our church broadcast service to an instrumental of Moon River recorded by musical friends from our church. It was so, so beautiful.
We love your outfits – tell us more!
I’ve never been keen on spending loads on a dress that I’d only be in for a day! So when we got engaged I saw the H&M dress first online and really enjoyed the silhouette, I thought the style matched my own really well. I did try on a few things at bridal shops around the city, just in case, but the only dress for me was the H&M one.
My very talented friend, Karol kindly altered the dress and gave me the white floral headpiece for my hair. I am 100% convinced that it doesn’t matter what you wear on your wedding day as long as it fits you well and you feel good in it!
Andrew’s jacket was from from Moss Bros and he wore it with chinos that he already owned.
Your photos are beautiful!
One of the reviews we read about Cara was that she was very unobtrusive and laidback, and this was exactly what we were looking for! She was a gem when we were figuring out what our day would look like amidst Covid uncertainty, bending backwards to work round us and what we found important.
Our photos are so special to us – our favourites are the candid moments of joy and hilarity she caught without us noticing. These are really wonderful memories that take us back to the day.
Any other members of your wedding team you’d like to give a shoutout to?
We loved them all – Cara Frew, Barvas & James, Karol Green Bridal, Butler and Brunch!
I had gotten fruit and veg box deliveries from Barvas & James a few times throughout lockdown – I really enjoyed their Instagram photos of their usual work (all the flowers and plants), and the closer we got to the wedding I thought it’d be great to support them.
We went for a wild and natural style with peonies, delphiniums and astilbe, as well as green eucalyptus and foliage. I was very keen to have seasonal flowers. It also smelled amazing and I wish I could have them in my home 24/7!
We’re guessing there were a few challenges along the way…
Where do we start! Our day was totally unlike our plans, like so many couples getting married at this time. But we really enjoyed our day and have loved being married – fully recommend just going ahead with your marriage!
Any advice to share?
Remember what’s important – it’s great having a big party with all your friends and family, eating an amazing feast and dancing the night away, but that fun is only for a day. Your commitment to each other in marriage is what lasts. Our desire to commit to each other before God was what drove the day and kept us going when things were so uncertain and difficult!
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
When we were walking in for the church broadcast service and Andrew waved to the wrong camera several times! It was hilarious!
Great advice here from Laura – focus on what’s important to you as a couple and you can’t go wrong. x
