An urban wedding with flowers, fruits and birds aplenty
FEATURING
Tradition with a twist, plus a whole lot of colour, was the inspiration behind Lorraine and Paul’s urban wedding. Their Humanist ceremony took place in Edinburgh and they styled their modern hotel venue with birds, a bespoke tableplan and a whole lot of flowers.
As a florist, Lorraine has dressed many of Scotland’s incredible venues with gorgeous floral designs. When it came to her own wedding, she wanted a venue that she hadn’t worked in and a space that would lend itself to the colour palette she wanted to bring in. With its contemporary spaces, The Village Urban Resort in Edinburgh felt like the perfect choice.
“I wanted tradition but with a twist, no white!” says Lorraine. “The only ivory part of the wedding was my dress. My shoes were teal to match my bridesmaids and at night I changed them to a pair of light up heels from Irregular Choice.”
Initially inspired by colour and sparkle, Lorraine added birds into the mix after falling in love with the venue’s bird cage light fixture. Fortunately, her friend and colleague, Gemma of Planet Flowers, helped rein her ideas in when she got carried away!
“Going with colour can be scary, too many colours and it could have cheapened the whole look but with Gemma guiding me through all of the decisions we created a stunning look to the whole day – from flowers through to linens, chairs and stationery.
One of Lorraine’s favourite elements was the tableplan they created together – a mini version of the room with tiny tables and napkins, and even a miniature model of their cake, beautifully handmade by Liggy’s Cakes.
Unsurprisingly, flowers were also an important part of the day, with lots of unique flowers, including a very unusual carnation that Lorraine had never seen before, featuring in the décor.
“When my guests arrived, I wanted them to notice the flowers, so we had tall vases full of orange, deep purple and deep red flowers at the entrance. We created a ceremony backdrop of oversized black frames filled with greenery and flowers in pinks, coral and deep purple, sitting beside a dressing table converted to a signing table, with drawers overflowing with flowers.”
The table flowers for the wedding breakfast were low bowls overflowing with textured, colourful flowers and fruits, and finished with candles. The top table was another highlight – its top was dressed with a full flower arrangement that tumbled off the front and down to the floor.
Lorraine’s bouquet was a grouped hand-tie design with hydrangea, roses, calla lily and trailing amaranthus. Meanwhile, her bridesmaids had similar style bouquets – one picked up the coral colours predominantly and the other the darker tones.
The men’s buttonholes were thistles with touches of coral and pale pink, while Paul’s was finished off with a little Mario brooch. Another quirky touch was the Go Pro that featured in Lorraine’s bouquet!
The couple chose a colourful cake design by Liggy’s Cakes, which was finished off beautifully with flowers.
“The minute we left the shop after our first meeting we were so excited, they not only made the tastiest cake but it was incredible – it was everything we wanted.”
While having all of their friends and family together was important to the couple, being able to include their daughter Grace in the celebration made it even more special.
Her bespoke flowergirl dress was made by Freja Designer Dressmaking. “Mette is a star and made the most beautiful dress for Grace with a matching bow tie for our page boy – they both looked adorable.”
When it came to getting their party started, Roddy of Reel Time Events, who had also piped for them earlier in the day, was on DJ duties and kept everyone dancing all night.
Loving all the colours and textures here. And that cake is amazing! Anyone else going for a warm, bold vibe? x
