An intimate winter wedding in Aberdeen
FEATURING
From the blush pink 50s style dress to the winter-inspired styling, there’s so much to love in this intimate Aberdeen wedding. Emily and Ewan were married at Hazelhead Park Cafe in Aberdeen, in a low, key, relaxed day with family at the heart. And how cute are their two little best men? So much to love!
Love at first sight or gradual attraction?
Gradual Attraction. I actually met Ewan as he worked for my father’s architectural practice. It wasn’t until my dad sadly passed away in 2009 that we then then started seeing each other the following year. My dad was very fond of Ewan, so I am sure he would approve.
What inspired your day?
Having been a couple for 8 years and having our two boys together we always wanted a low key, relaxed wedding. During the day at the ceremony and meal we just had our immediate family and then at night a party with all our friends and other family members.
We visit the park often with our two young boys and always thought the function room had a really lovely feel to it. It was the only venue we were really interested in and, luckily enough, they had availability for our chosen date.
I knew that I did not want a typical bridal bouquet and that I wanted something a bit wild looking. I had followed Flowers by Lilybet on Instagram and had loved her previous work and Christmas wreaths she had created. I sent her some pictures from Pintrest and she instantly got what I wanted. I left it up to her to choose the flowers for the bouquet, so when it arrived on the morning of the wedding it was a surprise but I absolutely loved it! It was exactly what I was looking for. For the buttonholes she did three different sizes for Ewan and our two boys, which was such a nice touch.
For the flowers at the venue, myself and my mum did all of these. We got jars from Home Bargains, decorated them with jute ribbon and then filled them with pale pink roses, eucalyptus, bay leaves and gypsophila and gifted these to guests at the end of the night.
I really love flowers and decorations so my mum and I did as much as we could ourselves. We did all the table decorations and flowers for the venue and the room looked stunning. We also decorated the Marks and Spencer cake with fresh eucalyptus and roses.
Sadly I lost my brother in an accident in 2006 and then my dad died in 2009. Ewan’s dad passed away in 2015, so we had a table with their photographs on it so that they were there in a way.
Our wedding suppliers – Liana Mitrea, Flowers by Lilybet, Jamie Tait Hair, Jenny Gray MUA and Pat Kennedy at The Park Cafe – are all absolutely amazing ladies and so talented in what they do!
We love your dress! Tell us more…
I didn’t want a white wedding dress and had always loved blush pink as a colour. I knew what kind of dress I wanted but I really struggled finding what I was looking for. I searched the internet and local boutiques but eventually came across the FairyGothMother website and ordered the dress in October, so I was cutting it a bit fine.
The dress arrived and luckily for me it fitted perfectly and did not require any alterations. The dress is a shorter 50s style tea length wedding dress with a very full skirt and satin and organza bodice, complete with decorative soft fold-down collar. The back features covered buttons and organza illusion panels.
And what about Ewan’s outfit?
We actually got our boys suits first from Marks and Spencer, so we looked for something that would match them. We went suit shopping on our lunchbreak one day and Ewan tried on a few suits but when he tried this one on it fitted really well, so that was the one he chose.
How did you choose your photographer?
We always knew it was going to be a small family wedding and we wanted a photographer that would capture our relaxed and informal day. Having viewed her website, we liked Liana Mitrea’s (Firefly & Embers) unique style.
We absolutely love our photographs and feel they captured the day perfectly. Liana made us feel so at ease and it was so lovely having her there to join in the celebrations.
Honeymoon or minimoon?
Minimoon – one night at the Blythswood Hotel & Spa in Glasgow in between Christmas and New Year. We will get our proper honeymoon in about 15 years when the boys no longer want to come on holiday with us!
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
Our sons giving us our rings during the ceremony.
Thanks for sharing your wedding with us Emily & Ewan – we loved hearing all about your magical day! x
