A house party at a rustic farm
FEATURING
From handmade hearts to moss graffiti, Michael and Sarah rocked the rustic vibes for their wedding at Dalduff Farm in Ayrshire this spring. And while Sarah fell out of love with her original choice of wedding dress, the second one she found made her feel amazing. Enjoy their relaxed, fun and very beautiful Scottish barn wedding.
Where did your love story begin?
Long story – here’s the short version! We met in high school when we were sat next to each other in English and the rest is history. We’ve been together ever since, living at opposite ends of the country while studying and working, and back together now in our own wee home with our beautiful dog, Smudge.
Michael proposed on our 11th anniversary while we were on holiday in Mexico. It was a beautifully weird proposal and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
What inspired your wedding plans?
At first we had huge plans and ideas, and as time went on and after visiting the venue again we really decided less is more. Especially the day before the wedding, we didn’t put up as much as we had planned in the end.
Our tartan heart themed ceremony room was all Michael’s idea. We had help from family and friends creating these – every heart is handmade. We got photos of family members whose marriages we admired and displayed them down our aisle, which was a beautiful nod to those who were there and those who couldn’t be. The entire day from start to finish was beautiful.
I hired a VW Campervan for Michael as a surprise the morning of the wedding to bring him and his family and friends to the farm.
Our save the dates, menus and table plans were all by us, created with our own artsy skills and Photoshop! Our invitations were by Caledonian Cowgirl – gig tickets featuring us!
Our florist, Little Botanica were a delight to work with. We gave them our brief and basically let them choose for us and we were not disappointed. We were blown away! Their attention to detail and artistry was commented on throughout the whole day, and we particularly loved our ‘The Careys!’ moss graffiti, which we’ve taken home and plan to hang in our garden.
Tell us more about your venue…
We actually saw a photo from a friend who was a guest at a wedding at Dalduff years ago. The night we got engaged, the image popped into my head and we planned to go see it straight away. We didn’t look anywhere else, we loved what we saw and the feeling we got when there.
The barn was beautiful, the scenery around the entire farm was beautiful, come rain or shine we felt like we’d have an amazing day regardless. This is where we were getting married and we did it!
Your photos are beautiful!
Shortly before we got engaged, Michael was helping his mum organise her wedding. He took her through to Falkirk, where she had arranged to meet with her potential photographers, Stacey and Bryan of Picturesque, Wedding & Family Photography.
Whilst there, Stacey and Bryan showed pictures of a wedding they had recently shot, in a venue very similar in style to the kind of thing he knew we would be looking for. He decided then that he would like to use Stacey and Bryan for our wedding, and aside from the venue, they were one of the first things we booked. We love that our photos are very natural and of everyone enjoying themselves.
We love your dress! Tell us more…
This was not my first dress…this was my second. My first dress was beautiful, however after a while, I tried it on again and I felt like it wasn’t me.
Hetty by Heidi Hudson was the second dress I tried on in WED2B in Glasgow. I immediately fell in love. It was everything I had imagined and wished for. I felt amazing.
I wore vegan vintage inspired sparkly bridal shoes by Roni Kantor, which I bought on etsy. My draped tulle veil was by Blossom and Bluebird and was absolutely beautiful. I wore a floral crown headpiece by Truffle and Podge which was stunning and hugely complimented throughout the day.
My jewellery was a gift from my mum from Swarovski Crystal. And my now husband gave me a bracelet, also from Swarovski Crystal – I was given it by my ‘sister cause of my mister’-in law the night before. I loved everything!
Michael’s kilt is his grandmother’s family tartan, he actually bought this three years prior to our wedding, for his sister’s wedding. For his own he got a new jacket and fly plaid, which he enjoyed referring to as his cape for most of the day!
What was your first dance song?
Our first dance was a slow version of Life in Colour by One Republic, played by one of our very close friends, Connor Brown, who is also a wedding singer, he made this extra special for us.
The Borrowed Blues had our dancefloor filled all night, I don’t even remember if they stopped for air. They were fantastic and they are still being talked about whenever we meet some of our guests.
Did everything go to plan on the day?
It all went perfectly… oh wait – the morning of the wedding, the zip burst on one of my bridesmaids’ dresses. And I think there were some other issues but no-one told us, we were oblivious! I don’t think anything would have upset us anyway. We were too busy smiling.
Another funny moment was when I just turned around to start walking down the aisle and my veil got caught on the barn and I got pulled backwards. It was hilarious! My brother helped me through it by making a joke of it all, asking if I wanted to make a run for it now. It was honestly all so perfect.
Did you manage to stick to your budget?
I’d say so. We did a lot of it DIY style and that helped, and we’re very lucky that our family and friends so generously helped us out. We can’t thank them enough.
Any suppliers you’d like to give a special shout out to?
I cannot stress how amazing 12 Lemons Fizz and Gin Bar is, they deserve a huge mention. The staff were fantastic, the drinks provided tasted amazing and they couldn’t have been more attentive to my guests or myself and my husband if they tried. Highly recommend!
Each supplier enhanced our day – our celebrant, Gerrie Douglas-Scott made our service so special, our venue was incredible, the food supplied filled everyone’s stomach, the drinks from 12 Lemons kept everyone going, our band kept the dancefloor jumping, make up artists/hair stylists kept all of us feeling fabulous, our cake was just what we needed again at midnight, our flowers have now dried and have became a keepsake for us both. Our photographers captured every special moment and we’re forever grateful.
Honeymoon or minimoon?
We went to Cuba! We also went with our two close friends, why not eh? Best holiday we’ve been on.
Any advice?
Just enjoy yourself! Dance with your friends, your family and your new husband/wife. Take a few moments together just the two of you, we did, mostly to have a really quick drink and it turned out to be the only drink we’d finish that day. Have the best day.
What’s the one moment you’ll always remember?
For me, I remember sitting after the speeches, I had just finished my dinner and I took a moment to look around, there was everyone I loved, who could be there, in one place for Michael and I, it was just so special. Everyone was laughing, eating and having what looked like such a great time.
We love that these two honeymooned with friends – as Sarah says, why not?! After all, making new traditions that suit you as a couple is one of the most fun parts of getting married! x
