BALLONS AND BRIGHT COLOURS FOR A RELAXED, FUN GLASGOW WEDDING

Happy New Year! After a couple of weeks of cheese and cava action, we are excited to be easing ourselves back into the work zone. And what better way to kick off 2019 than with a colourful, fun and relaxed wedding with two stylish grooms who just can’t stop smiling!

After an unconventional first meeting, Richard and Jon fell head over heels in love and have since made Glasgow their home. They really wanted to have a Humanist ceremony, which helped seal their decision to be wed in Scotland, and chose a light-filled space for their ceremony and a blank canvas East End venue for their reception. With the help of friends (who had been promised free wine!) they filled it with balloons, bright colours and a lot of love. Their beautiful day is making us smile lots!

Love at first sight or gradual attraction?

We don’t like to admit it but it probably was love at first sight. We met in a pub on a night out in Liverpool where Richard was pick-pocketed and his friends all thought Jon had done it!

After two years of long distance we lived in Liverpool, Cardiff and Glasgow, and after six years on a trip to New York we got engaged… incredibly we had both taken rings with us and planned to propose to each other without discussing it at all!

Tell us about your venues…

We’ve lived in Glasgow for the last four years even though we are both originally from England. Partly it is logistically easier to get married where you live. And we also really wanted to have a Humanist ceremony which isn’t legal in England. Plus all our families love coming up to Glasgow!

We found Drygate first and loved the space there because it was a totally blank canvas in a cool east end location with lots of opportunity to make it our own. Plus it is well known for its excellent food and delicious beer.

We wanted to have the ceremony within easy walking distance and a friend recommended St Mungo Museum. When we visited we loved the room with light flooding through the huge windows and walled garden. The capacity worked perfectly for our numbers. When we visited both venues the staff were amazing, friendly and so helpful.

What inspired you?

Richard is a theatre designer and had a great time designing the space! Plus he had recently designed a Bollywood musical which definitely featured heavily! We had a team of amazing friends that helped us the day before to dress the space on the promise of free wine.

Richard’s mum, Helen did most of the beautiful flowers which were supplied by Bonnie Fleurs who also did the buttonholes and a few more formal arrangements.

Again we chose our florist after visiting a few because they were fun, energetic and made us feel relaxed. They got straight away that we wanted to do unusual and informal flower arrangements with bright mixed flowers, and they did a wonderful job!

We designed and made all our stationery ourselves and a family friend, Maggie brought our cake all the way from Holland! Our balloons were supplied by HiFliers Balloons who were amazing and so excited about our crazy ideas!

We love your outfits! Tell us more…

We decided to go for high street suits and asked our friend Rachel to tailor them so they fitted amazingly. We wanted to be co-ordinated but not matching so that our outfits were very ‘us’.

Jon’s suit was Ben Sherman from Debenhams, his shirt was from Paul Smith and his waistcoat from Next. Richard’s suit was from Topman, his shirt from Next, and his waistcoat was made by Rachel Johneon. We both wore ties from M&S.

We were informal with the ‘groomal’ parties and asked people to wear what made them feel special!

Your photos are making us smile so much!

We did a lot of searching for the right photographer and we came across Suzanne’s website and loved her photos. When we emailed her she was so friendly and offered an hourly rate which suited us perfectly.

On the day Suzanne was absoloutly lovely with all our guests and made us feel completely at ease. During the ceremony she was like a ninja and we didn’t notice her intruding at all. The photos are beautiful and arrived ahead of schedule!

What was your first dance song?

We decided that we wanted everyone to be part of our first dance and not have something formal that everyone stands and watches. So we led Strip The Willow for the first ceilidh dance!

The band were absolutely amazing, playing a short ceilidh followed by a wedding disco. The dance floor was packed all night!

Honeymoon or minimoon – how did you relax after the big day?

We went the day afterwards to Lanzarote for 10 days. We sat in the sun, drank wine and piled all the pre-wedding diet weight straight back on.

Any advice?

To relax and enjoy yourselves – both on the day and during the planning. It should be fun after all – don’t make it a trial.

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

The sunny happy feel. Everyone smiled for the whole day and the weather was amazing! (Particularly surprising in Glasgow, it must be a sign!)

We love seeing bright colours and so many big, relaxed smiles in a wedding. And isn’t it brilliant that Richard and Jon both planned to propose to each other on the same trip?! Clearly it was meant to be! Congratulations from all here at We Fell In Love! x
