5 alternative romantic European city breaks

It’s no secret that we’re always dreaming of our next trip here at WFIL HQ. And with our travel wishlists constantly evolving (and growing!), we thought we’d share five of our favourite places to spend a romantic, and fun, weekend for two.

1. A houseboat in Amsterdam

Romance may not be the first thing to spring to mind when you think of Amsterdam, but we love the idea of spending a couple of nights snuggling up in a traditional houseboat in this vibrant, creative city. Not only is this floating studio apartment kitted out with a beautiful new kitchen, it also has a fireplace both inside and out (so romantic!). It’s situated at Noordermarkt (famous for its Saturday food market), beside lots of great restaurants and vintage boutiques. Sounds perfect to us!

2. Luxury penthouse in Helsinki

Cold countries always feel romantic to us – it’s all that cosying up that you have to do! Helsinki has been high on our wish list for some time now, and we can’t wait to visit this culture-packed place. When we do, this luxury penthouse is where we want to be. Light and bright, and close to the sea, it’s also a short walk from the city centre.

3. Charismatic apartment in Istanbul

Istanbul stole our hearts the very first time we visited. A wonderful place where East meets West, the city straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. We have very fond memories of the call to prayer drifting over the streets as the mouthwatering scent of Simit (delicious circular bread) filled the air. With its edgy vibe and great location, this apartment on Istiklal Street looks like a pretty perfect base to explore the city from.

Be sure to check the FCO website for the latest travel information for Turkey, and the other featured destinations, before booking your trip.

4. Stylish, fun studio flat in Budapest

With its beautiful buildings and cosy winter markets, Budapest is another place we’re longing to explore. This playful apartment is located in one of the most fashionable areas of the city and thanks to the host’s interior design skills, comes complete with a slide from the gallery to the living room. Just imagine the fun you could have with that…

5. A private roof terrace in Oslo

Set amidst mountains and the sea, and with incredible design, culture and nightlife to boot, Oslo is full of our favourite things. With its blend of vintage, DIY and design, this soulful apartment in central Oslo is somewhere we’d love to stay. And the private roof top terrace, with its colourful lights and outside heater, looks like the perfect place to snuggle up for the evening.
