Less is More

With its soft and romantic vibe, Samantha and Michael’s wedding theme was all about classical elegance. Holding onto the mantra “less is more”, they created a day that was filled sunshine and ended with drinking whisky into the wee hours. Sounds pretty perfect to us.

How did you meet and become engaged?

We met in 2012 at the Corinthian in Glasgow, after a few drinks I thought Michael looked like Ryan Gosling (which on reflection he doesn’t) and decided to use this to start talking to him.

We then had one date but as Michael was in a band and too busy for a relationship we remained friends until 2015. Michael them moved into a flat near mine in the west end and it was that point we became a couple. After 6 months of dating Michael proposed to me, after asking my Dad’s permission, on Christmas Day at my parents house, in my old bedroom.

Our wedding day was inspired by…

We really wanted a large, traditional wedding with all our family and friends. We also wanted our guests to have fun and party with us to celebrate our special day. I wanted our wedding to be classy and elegant and my mum kept saying “less is more”.

The main colour at our wedding was white and then we added lots of greenery with the flowers as well as some elements of blush pink, there were a lot of blush peonies and I added gold in terms of the invitation and stationary and at each venue we had lots of candles to create a soft, romantic ambience. I hired a company to dress Lochgreen House with the colour palate and themes that I wanted.

Tell us more about your venues…

The first venue (Glasgow Univeristy Chapel) is special to us as it is beautiful, traditional landmark in the West End of Glasgow, which is the area we met and now live in so we have the pleasure of walking past it on a daily basis. The chapel itself has many grand and breathtaking elements to it from the beautiful stained glass windows to the original stone and woodwork pieces. The inward facing pews allow All the wedding guests a good view of the ceremony.

The second venue is Lochgreen House Hotel which is 45 minutes from Glasgow on the west coast. Lochgreen House is a traditional country house which sits in the countryside in the west coast of Scotland. We loved the homely but elegant ambience this hotel offers as well as the stunning food and canapés.

Tell us about your photography experience…

We fell in love with First Light Photography after seeing Ditte’s work online. The light in the pictures is simply stunning and Ditte managed to capture all the important aspects of the day.

We were overwhelmed by the work she carried out before, during and after our wedding day and can’t thank her enough and our photos exceeded all our expecatations. Additionally Ditte is a lovely person and very happy to help out with non-photography related issues on our wedding day.

Tell us more about your flowers?

We chose to go with a quirky, local florist shop around the corner from our house in the west end in Glasgow. I was absolutely delighted with my flowers and being able to see all the elements of the wedding coming together on the day added to my excitement.

We chose white, purple and pink flowers with lots of green foliage for the bouquets, bridal party hair, table decorations and pedicles for the church. My favourite flower is the peony which was the main one featured. The groom had a White rose buttonhole and groomsmen had thistle buttonholes.

We love your dress. How did you go about selecting?

My wedding dress was not the dress I had expected to get, I tried it on in the first shop I went to only because it was the only white dress in the shop just to see what the colour would be like however it seemed to fit and suit me perfectly.

I then decided to go shopping around to try different styles before coming back to this one. I made a few alterations to the original dress which was actually a 2010 Maggie Sottero dress. I had the bow at the back of the dress made bigger and made to clip on rather than to be tied on the day. I also changed the neck line to sweet heart style and added a large underskirt and underskirt for the train of the dress.

The dress had an inbuilt corset which was great for making my waistline look smaller than it actually is and I liked that some of the corset detail could be seen at the back. I also wore a cathedral length double teared veil to provide some modesty during the church service which kept my Gran happy! The veil was plain with a scalloped edge and a few appliqués down the edges.

And the groom’s outfit?

The Groom had his own kilt specially made from Macgregor and Macduff kilt makers. The groomsmen, father of the bride and page boys all wore kilt jackets to match the grooms and the Aaran Mist tartan. The groom wore his own tartan.

Tell us something surprising about your wedding day

We were totally overwhelmed by the love and support we received from all our family and friends on our wedding day… additionally the weather was a huge surprise as it was warm and sunny the entire day which meant the guests could
Enjoy the grounds at Lochgreen, it was amanzing to see everyone with their sunglasses on!

What did you do for music?

We had a piper for the church ceremony then a Harpist and Gutiar duo called Celtic Twist who played classical Music at the reception along with a magician to entertain the guests.

At night we had The Drams who started with a ceilidh then moved onto a DJ set which included a few of our favourite songs. Our first dance was to the Smashing Pinkins called Stand Inside Your Love

Any Advice?

I think to make sure you enjoy every second of it as the day goes by in a flash and not to worry about the small details. Also not to worry about the guests as they will be having a great time and are there to support you and wish you well and do not expect to spend lots of time with you as they appreciate you are trying to say hi to everyone.

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

I loved every second of my wedding day from getting ready with my Mum and bridesmaids at my parents house in the morning and seeing all the elements that we had chosen e.g. flowers and dresses come together, to our first dance and then drinking whisky at the bar until the early ours of the morning.

Saying our vows whilst surrounded by our closest family and friends was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget and feeling their love and happiness is something we will never forget.

We have to admit to swooning a lot over this wedding. How about you? Alie x
