Edinburgh Vow Renewal
by Sue-Slique Photography

After 10 years of happy, but hectic, marriage, Amber and Rory wanted to do something a little special to celebrate their anniversary. They travelled from Canada to renew their vows here in Scotland, and their love story was captured beautifully by Olesja of Sue-Slique Photography, who took them on an autumnal walking trip through Edinburgh’s Old Town and into the volcanic hills that surround the city. So much to love!

Love at first sight or gradual attraction?
Me and Rory met when I started working at Intergraphics Decal, a print shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I thought he was cute, but we worked in different departments and didn’t see a lot of each other. Months passed and I assumed he wasn’t interested. Then my supervisor invited some work people to her cabin for September long weekend. Rory needed a ride and I offered to drive out there. Getting to spend the weekend together created some sparks, and he confessed he had liked me but was too shy to ask me out. But after the weekend together, it was easy to make plans and we’ve been together ever since.
Where and when did you tie the knot?
We got married October 14, 2006 at Bridges Golf Course just outside Winnipeg. It was a beautiful sunny day spent with 120 of our closest family and friends. And my family still tells me that our wedding has been the best wedding they’ve ever been to. (I’m pretty sure the open bar had something to do with that!
What made you choose to have a vow renewal?
We decided to renew our vows because life has been so hectic. We got married, bought a house, got a dog, did home renovations, both of us switched careers, and had two kids on top of all that. It’s been wonderful, but busy, and we wanted a chance to reconnect with each other. Because before all the craziness, it was just the two of us, and we didn’t want to lose touch with that.

Why Scotland?
We chose Scotland because lots of people recommended it as their favourite holiday. Plus, there is a romantic, timeless feel,to Scotland that I felt would be the perfect backdrop for our vow renewal.
Any advice for newlyweds?
Our advice for newlyweds is to enjoy your time together, because life quickly adds to it, and you can forget about why you got married in the first place. Also, marriage isn’t like the movies. It’s romantic and sunshine and rainbows in the beginning, but it gets hard and you have to work at it. All the time. But the effort you put in shows when your husband becomes your best friend, your confidante, the first person you think of when you hear a funny joke. And when you renew your vows after ten years and realize you’re both saying the same thing, you’ve done something right by marrying this person and sharing your life with them. And you’ll look forward to the next ten years even more!
We couldn’t have done it without…
We wouldn’t have been able to renew our vows in Scotland without the help of
Sue-Slique Photography. I emailed Olesja with my very rough idea of renewing our vows in Scotland and taking some pics and she did the rest, including bringing
Laura Gray to our hotel room to do my hair and makeup to make me beautiful. Olesja then led us through the beautiful city and captured our special day on film for us to enjoy over and over. It was perfect.

I absolutely love this idea and am feeling more than a little inspired! Jay and I are celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary this spring. Where do you think we should go for it? Christina x
