Excuse us for a little bit of mild self-indulgence, but we were more than a little chuffed to know that this very blog you’re reading, We Fell In Love has been in the Top 100 Wedding Blogs on the Planet…
For an idea that started over a bottle of wine 5 years ago (as all best ideas do) to a business that is growing from strength to strength all the time, it has been an amazing journey.
We’re delighted that others love our blog so much and we can’t wait for all the new developments we’ve got up our sleeves. Go us!
Wedding Open Evenings
September means start of autumn, which means start of some new cracking TV; a chance to shop for some new seasonal wear and time for wedding open days.
Two of our favourite Edinburgh wedding venues are opening their majestic doors and letting you come and imagine how your wedding day could be.
How about the magical Mansfield Traquair for your out-of-this-world wedding day. It’s awe-inspiring height and frescos never fail to inspire. Just step inside and you will fall in love. Fact.
On Friday 14 October 2016 between 5pm-8pm Mansfield Traquair is hosting a wedding open evening. More details here.
Or how about the simply stunning Signet Library? Right in the heart of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile it makes it perfect for city lovers and destination wedding planners alike. What’s not to love about this library?
For a chance to see for yourself get along to their wedding opening evening on Friday 30th September between 6pm and 8pm. Find out more here.
Heather’s Cakes
Cake anyone? And by cake, I don’t mean any wedding cake, I mean the delicious and every so slightly beautifully crafted cakes from Heather’s Cakes.
We’ve always been huge fans of Heathers (it helps that the first time we met she fed us cake) and are so excited to see her new website launched this week.
Check it out for incredible design inspiration and general loving of all things cake.
OK weekend, let’s be having you. Feel free to share any of your loves or must-sees. Alie x
Photographed by Craig & Eva Sandersat The Signet LibraryEdinburgh-ScotlandFrom the sublime styling to the elegant library setting, we are still so in love with Susan & Hamish’s wedding style. Add in a dessert table to die for, super pretty flowers and a spot of late night stair sledging (orchestrated by the mother-of-the-groom rumour has it!), and we would have loved to have been guests at their wedding. Enjoy this week’s trip down memory lane. #ThrowbackThursday
Who saw who first?
Hamish and I met in 2011 through mutual friends. At the time, Hamish’s housemate, Fiona was the head nurse at my practice (I am a vet) and she and I had arranged to go to the cinema to see Harry Potter one Friday night and she said she might ask a few other people along. Little did I know this was actually a set-up as Hamish had asked to be introduced to me and apparently spent most of the day telling his work colleagues that he was going on a date with a girl who didn’t know she was going on a date. Sounds a little weird on paper but was actually pretty funny and I didn’t find this out until much later – I suppose I should be flattered! We were inseparable almost immediately.
And how was the big question popped?
Hamish had always said he would never propose on a birthday or at Christmas, so on my 30th I had absolutely no expectations of a proposal. However, he planned an amazing day in the Lake District for my birthday, including afternoon tea on a private yacht on Lake Windermere and a suite in the most gorgeous boutique hotel. Over dinner I actually commented to him that if he ever did decide to propose he had set the bar pretty high with my birthday! In hindsight he didn’t really say much in reply to this! When we got back to the hotel, I sat in our hot tub and waited for Hamish to bring out the champagne – when he eventually came outside he got down on one knee and I was genuinely taken completely by surprise.
We were inspired by…
We went into wedding planning with no themes or any firm ideas of what we wanted. In the end, the venue set the tone but honestly, we both have quite simple, classic taste and our wedding reflected this.
I did read We Fell In Love – I followed via bloglovin so I didn’t miss a post! I’m also pretty sure I found our photographers through the blog.
Tell us about your venue…
I was set on our venue immediately and booked it after having literally being inside once for about five minutes! We always knew we wanted something a little different for our venue but we didn’t really know what that ‘different’ looked like, or even where it would be. After countless hours of internet searching we spent a day visiting venues in the Edinburgh area, including an open day at Mansfield Traquair, which is beautiful but just wasn’t for us. While we were there, the events company who run Mansfield mentioned another Edinburgh venue which they ran – the Signet Library. A quick internet search later and I knew I had to see this venue! They also had an open day running and we literally ran in the door as they were closing everything up for the day. My dad was still circling the block trying to park the car but I was convinced immediately – this was the place we would get married.
I loved the location of being right on the Royal Mile with the cobbles and St Giles Cathedral right outside. It’s also pretty unknown though, despite its location very few people have heard of it, and really you would not know it was there if no one told you.
The Upper Library, where we had our reception is incredible. I really don’t think words can describe how much I loved it. It’s grand without being stuffy and the vaulted ceiling is just amazing.
And something surprising about your day…
Not sure I should own up to this one! The day after the wedding we heard a rumour about certain guests deciding it would be fun to slide down the stairs on a silver tea tray… very mature I know. It turns out there was photographic evidence of this, prior to the management dealing with the situation. And who did we spot at the top of the stairs, overseeing the action but Hamish’s seventy-four year old mother! We spent a reasonable part of our honeymoon expecting an email with an additional bill for a tea tray!
Your dress is so beautiful! How did you find it?
This was not the dress I thought I’d pick. I had every intention of buying a fishtail strapless dress. As you can see I ended up with something rather different. This dress was huge and I loved that about it. The size of it though was balanced out by how simple the rest of it was and although I had a wobble about it maybe being too plain a few weeks before the wedding, I was totally wrong and it was perfect and very me.
What did you choose for your first dance?
“Shelter from the Storm’ by Bob Dylan, which may seem a bit random to some but we liked the sentiment behind it and we liked the folky sound of it.
Any advice?
Relax and enjoy it. It is actually a bit surreal walking around knowing that it is your wedding and all these people are here for you. That said, I wish we had taken a little longer to look around – for example, before the wedding breakfast, I wish we’d had five minutes to look around the reception room because there are definitely details I missed, in particular I wish I’d had more of a chance to look at our beautiful dessert table!
Why Scotland?
It’s home and allowed us to spend our day surrounded by our friends and family.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
I honestly think our wedding was the best party we will ever go to (biased I know) but the dancefloor was full all night and we both loved seeing our friends and family having such a great time. We couldn’t have asked for more.
Is it just me, or is anyone else still crushing hard on Susan’s beaded headband? LOVE it! Christina x

Venue – The Signet Library, Edinburgh
Caterer – Heritage Portfolio, the events and catering company who run The Signet were excellent in every way. The service on the day and attention to detail was second to none and the food was wonderful. Photographer – Craig and Eva Sanders Photography. We cannot praise Craig and Eva highly enough! We picked them because of their light and natural style and we were not disappointed. The number of people (including friends of friends who we don’t even know) who have said our wedding photos are the most beautiful they’ve ever seen is astounding – especially amazing considering neither of us likes having our photo taken and certainly would not generally describe ourselves as photogenic! I’ve said it already but I will say it again – Absolutely blown away by the images they produced. Florist – Planet Flowers. Gemma is a genius. To be honest I could probably leave it at that but I will try to be a bit more descriptive! From the moment my mum and I met Gemma, I knew we were in great hands. I took some images and the colours of my bridesmaids’ dresses along and answered a few questions about what I liked and didn’t like and that was it really. And of course the flowers were fantastic on the day. Hair stylist – David Corbett Hairdressing Make-up artist – Eyecandy Wedding dress – Pronovias‘ Ontario at Anne Priscilla. Shoes – Freya Rose ‘Jane’ Accessories – Accessory Boutique in Glasgow made me a bespoke beaded headband and two hair clips. The lady who owns the shop and makes the jewellery and accessories is lovely and so helpful, not to mention excellent value. Bridesmaids’ dresses – Dessy 2906, 2908, 6706 Stationery – The Printed Love Co (Sophie Collection) semi-bespoke Cake – Heather’s Cakes. Gorgeous, gorgeous dessert table and cake pops that disappeared in a matter of minutes as word got around about how delicious they were! Band – Callanish. When we asked friends for recommendations for a wedding band, Callanish were mentioned time and time again. We wanted a mix of music including a bit of ceilidh and didn’t want anything too cheesy. They played a few songs we had specifically asked them to learn – including our first dance. Transport – Classic VW campervan from Ecosse Classic Cars Additional suppliers – Allestri String Quartet (although we had a flute in place of one violin). Our Humanist celebrant, Ross Wright from the Humanist Society Scotland was great – our ceremony was so personal and touching and that was all down to him. + DIY weddingsat Comrie CroftPerthshire-ScotlandIt was love at first sight when we set eyes upon Comrie Croft (and that was before Gerard Butler popped in for a visit the other week!). We’ve been dreaming of watching the snow fall from one of their Nordic katas ever since. If you are looking for an alternative venue for a DIY woodland or barn wedding, then this could so be the one. We caught up with Ellen Haste, wedding co-ordinator extraordinaire, to get the backstage chat on this magical place.
Tell us a little more about Comrie Croft – how did it all begin?
It all began as a farm situated just outside the quaint village of Comrie. The farm was home to chickens, sheep and cattle with a few fields for arable farming. The farmer at this stage decided to add to the business and transform what was farm outbuildings into a bunkhouse destination for groups, families and friends.
The current owners took over in 2008 and added an eco-friendly campsite to the mix and started building all the famous Comrie Croft bike trails.
What’s been the highlight so far?
The highlight of Comrie Croft so far has got to be when Gerard Butler popped by for a cuppa in the Tea Garden of course! Haha…… no the real highlight has to be speaking to couples the day after their wedding and hearing them say how ideal the Croft was for their special day, made even more special by the fact that they got to decide exactly how they wanted it, which really enforces the great aspect of DIY.
What do you love most about Croft weddings?
I love that Comrie Croft weddings are always different; from tug of war competitions, to festival weddings (even with wrist bands!) to Harry Potter creations, the list goes on!
DIY is what it is all about here at the croft. Couples choose everything they wish, which is why it is so interesting for us to see everyone’s ideas – every wedding really does have its own personal stamp.
We have been hosting weddings for 10 years now, and hopefully for many years to come.
We love your alternative honeymoon suite! Tell us more about the Nordic katas…
Think falling asleep to the sound of trees swaying in the wind, crackling fires inside and out, cosy sheepskin rugs and lots of space too!
In three words, Comrie Croft brides are…
Comrie Croft brides (& grooms!) are imaginative, brave and really cool – everyone will be so amazed at what you have done to the barn!
Feeling smitten? We hear ya! The super friendly team at Comrie Croft would love to chat through your ideas for your wedding. You can call them on 01764 670140 or email [email protected]
Having recently stayed there, I highly recommend checking out Comrie Croft for your wedding (or minimoon). It’s such a special place! Christina x

by Kevin Key Photographyat Altskeith HouseLoch Ard-ScotlandToday we’re travelling to the scenic Trossachs, for a summer wedding that is packed with bold brights and DIY charm. Inspired by the country house setting, Laura & David’s lemon & white themed wedding was full of fun, laughter and all the feels. We love their super relaxed style!
Who saw who first?
We met through our local pub, The Crown Hotel in Callander, we used to text each other and then when we saw each other would ignore each other. This went on for quite a while before we finally got together. The rest is history – we got our first flat, lived together for a few years, and I always said I didn’t want to get engaged on Christmas day or my birthday but on Christmas Day 2014 David proposed.
We were inspired by…
We
wanted a summery, laid back, personal wedding day. Our colour scheme was lemon and white – I like sunflowers and daisies.
We had candles with photos of our family that had passed away, school photos of me and David, a letter from Alex Ferguson as David is Man Utd daft so I wrote to him about our engagement and he sent a letter back about marriage being a marathon not a sprint.
I made my own centrepieces, we had wooden logs with jar of sweets, a candle and flower. I also made my seating plan to match the invitations that I made. And we made an anniversary piñata so our guests could put jokes, messages or predictions inside it so we can smash it and read them on our 1 year anniversary.
We love your look – tell us more…
I tried on quite a few dresses and chose the exact opposite from what I thought I wanted. Doreen at Amilou was amazing and very helpful, the dress I chose was A line, with buttons up the back, it was fitted at the top and floaty at the bottom. I am really bad at describing things but it made me feel amazing!
I got my shoes on eBay, im not a heels kinda girl so wedding Converse with my married name on them is what I wore.
I had a beautiful veil and a Swarovski bracelet.
What did you choose for your first dance?
You’re my best friend by Queen.
Any advice?
Don’t do it… kidding! Eeveryone says enjoy every minute because it goes so fast but it is so true, my advice would be to get a videographer because you do miss so much of your day or forget it because it is so overwhelming.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
How happy everyone was, all the people you love having an amazing time, I can’t describe the feelings on that day.
I love the sound of the anniversary piñata! Anyone got any other ideas like this to share? Christina x

by Ena May Photographyat Monachyle MhorPerthshire -ScotlandA beautiful boutique farmhouse hotel with a Dutch barn to party in was the perfect setting for Helen and Sandy’s wedding. Their vision was for a day that combined their love of the outdoors, food and their favourite people. We think they nailed it…
How did you meet and become engaged?
We worked together for two months back in 2002 at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. We lost contact after I went back to Ireland but then met again by chance in 2013 at a music festival called Electric Picnic.
We took time off from work to go travelling for two months in early 2015. While at my parents’ for New Year just before, Sandy asked my dad’s permission to marry his daughter. While travelling around Central America, Sandy found the right moment and asked me to marry him, watching the sun set from a cliff top near San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.
We were inspired by…
A love of the outdoors, great food and good people.
Tell us something surprising about your day…
A lovely speech in Irish by our bridesmaid Mary Anne and two videos the best man somehow managed to arrange from a comedian called Martin Mhor and 90s computer game guru Dominik Diamond. The best man also did a beautiful carving with wood from our parents’ gardens.
We love your dress – tell us more!
The thing that struck me most about this wedding dress was that it was comfortable and that for me was the most important element of finding my dress. I got a very talented young lady, Samantha (Wildest Dreams Bridal) in Edinburgh to make the back necklace for the dress and that just finished it off nicely.
I needed a dress that have me a bit of shape, so the ruching on the waist and bum of the dress worked well. The leather jacket was a mate’s from Primark as were the flip flops I ended up wearing. My favourite thing about my dress though was the headpiece, also from Edel Tuite Design!
Did you enjoy the whole photography experience?
What can I say about this girl…..she is extremely affable, friendly, chilled and talented.
I am not a lover of the camera but Becky (EnaMay Photography) managed to relax us both and captured our day as it was… natural, fun and full of love. The photos are exceptional. Becky worked tirelessly for the whole day… she manages to have that perfect combination of professionalism and natural Scottish chat!
How did you arrange your wedding transport?
We used our campervan and one of our best friends, Gary Bowman drove me and my dad to the church and me and Sandy back to the venue after the ceremony. It was perfect as we had our favourite craft beers chilling in the fridge for us!
Any advice?
Don’t over plan it and stress yourselves out. It’s your day so do what feels right for you and spend as much time on the day as possible together.
Why Scotland?
Sandy’s grandmother of 95 wouldn’t have been able to travel to Ireland for the wedding. We wanted her to be able to share the day with us.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
There are honestly too many great memories to single out one. The church, venue, weather, food, band, speeches…. I could go on!
I love Helen’s laid-back approach, don’t you? And sipping a cool craft beer in the back of a campervan, right after the ceremony, sounds pretty good to me! Alie x
