A winter wonderland wedding in the Cairngorms

Today we’re travelling to the wild beauty of the Cairngorms national park, where Joanna and Duncan tied the knot in December in a very white wedding. With the help of their family and friends, they created their own table decorations and place settings (love the pheasant feathers!). And they had the whole weekend to celebrate. Sounds pretty perfect to us!

How did you two meet?

We met whilst studying in Aberdeen. Duncan proposed whilst we were holidaying in Applecross on the west coast of Scotland on the beach, with views to the mountains of Skye.

We were inspired by…

We wanted our wedding day to be relaxed and informal. With the help of family and friends we created our own table decorations, place settings and flower arrangements for the venue. This was all based on a rough colour scheme of gold.

The flowers were one of the aspects of the wedding day that I was so excited about. I met with Elaine (The Secret Garden) once and she took on board all of my ideas and requests, nothing was too much trouble. The bouquets that she created exceeded all of my expectations and looked incredible. They were so perfect for our winter wedding. I still have my bouquet at home!

We wanted a venue which provided accommodation for all of our guests so that we could spend the weekend with them. Mar Lodge was perfect, we held our wedding ceremony and reception there and all guests stayed on site, which was lucky since the weather was pretty wintry! We fell in love with the place and the setting, so beautiful.

We are in love with your dress! Tell us more…

I was looking for something simple with sleeves and a high neckline. I chose wedding separates as I loved the idea of being able to wear them again one day. My dress was so comfortable and I felt amazing in it, it required very little alteration, however the alterations I had done were by Fabricated Bridal in Glasgow, who I cannot recommend enough. I also bought my veil from their shop.

I wanted to wear little in the way of accessories so kept it to rose gold and blue drop earrings borrowed from my youngest sister and my great grandmother’s engagement ring, borrowed from my aunty.

My bridesmaids wore the Maya V neck maxi tulle dress with tonal delicate sequins in ‘taupe’ from ASOS.

And what about Duncan’s outfit?

Duncan’s dad is Scottish and he knew he wanted to wear tartan on the day. He decided to go for tartan trews as he felt that they were versatile and something he would wear again after the wedding.

Your photos are beautiful!

Rebecca was the most amazing wedding photographer. We knew that we didn’t want to spend ages away from our guests having photos taken, Rebecca listened to this but still delivered incredible photos which really capture the atmosphere of the day.

Any advice?

We chose to have some ‘first look’ photos taken prior to our ceremony, this really helped to take away the pre wedding nerves.

If you can, go on honeymoon straight after your wedding, even just for a few days. Being ‘newlyweds’ is such a wonderful time and it’s amazing having time to spend together reminiscing about your wedding day!

Why Scotland?

We met in Scotland, live in Scotland and love Scotland! The breathtaking beauty of Mar Lodge Estate is not something you could replicate easily elsewhere.

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

Sounds cliched but having all of your closest friends and family in one place eating, drinking and being merry really is hard to beat!

Great advice on the first look. And how cute is the flower girl’s outfit?! Christina x
