Barn Wedding with Blossoms, Beer and Banter

Rustic and filled with beautiful details, Catherine and Michael’s wedding was all about family and friends celebrating. We have fallen in love with their styling and their barn setting and something tells us you will too…

How did you meet and become engaged?

We met through my best friend and her husband. Her husband is Michael’s step brother so we have gone from being best friends to sister-in-laws. We met at Michael’s 21st birthday but did not get together until after my 21st 4 months later.

We became engaged in Edinburgh on the ferris wheel at the Christmas market in november 2015. We had been together since December 2009 so Michael had received a bit of stick from my family that it was ‘about time’.

Our wedding day was inspired by…

We like things that look more natural and rustic. Everyone having fun and enjoying themselves was the most important thing for us. Michael works for BrewDog so he wanted to have plenty of good beer flowing. He brewed his own beer as favours. As the barn is on a berry farm we made our own raspberry gin as favours also.

Family and friends were so important to us on our day. Our grandfathers were our witnesses, Michael’s dad was our master of cermonies, Michael’s nephew at 6 was a groomsman and we made sure our friends were included in our ceremony.

Tell us more about your venue…

Our venue is very new to the northeast of scotland, we were only the second wedding they had hosted. It is a beautiful purpose built barn set in rural aberdeenshire with stunning views of Bennachie. When we booked it was only a cow shed, but my what a transformation!

The result was above and beyond any expectation we had, and they were already set high by the drawing we saw at the start. Every detail was beautiful, the decor, the lighting, the space, the views, even the toilets are a sight to behold! It’s such a functional and beautiful space you can set it and dress it up in any which was you would like and it works!

How did you find your photographer?

Donna is amazing! We booked Donna after my best friend booked her to photograph her wedding. My other best friend has subsequently booked her also. She is so lovely and down to earth and her work is stunning. She can make even the gloomiest of days look beautiful.

She focuses more on natural shots which is exactly the style we like. She is unobtrusive when taking pictures of the ceremony and speeches but manages to capture all the important moments beautifully.

We had a pre wedding shoot which was great fun, especially for us as neither is a natural in front of camera. Donna put us at ease and we had a good laugh with her. Everyone has commented on how fab our pictures look. She’s so professional but also so easy to get along with. It was like she was a member of our bridal party!

Tell us more about your flowers…

Suki Hudson of Hudson’s Catering was the brains behind the decor and flowers for our day. We met as Hudson’s were our caterers and Suki often creates amazing decor for their weddings. The result was spectacular.

I like a more natural rustic look to flowers. We had lavender and rosemary on the tables to give a great scent. He also had a lot of green foliage with white and cream flowers accented by a dusky pink to highlight to add a bit of a lift.

We had fabulous ‘trees’ created with silver birch log trunks and masses of beautiful flowers at the top. Beautiful dusky pink amnesia roses and cream peonies surrounded by other beauties and greenery. The attention to detail was amazing! We had milk bottles on the chairs of the aisles with flowers, we ever had these in the toilets!

Our bouquets were beautiful, Trina was conscious not to make them too bulky as I have quite a petite frame. They had amnesia roses and cream peonies but also white snapdragons, pink astrantia and maiden fern all bound in hessian to make them look more rustic and give a country feel. I absolutely loved my flowers!

We love your dress. How did you find it?

I love lace dresses. I was looking for something lace and quite fitted so as not to overwhelm me. I’m only 5ft 3 and about a size 6-8 so big dresses didn’t really suit me. I loved the fit and the lace of this dress, the back was also a huge draw for me with the open lace back and beautiful covered buttons.

I must add at this point that I cannot thank Lorraine and Doreen at Our Day enough for what they did for me. One month after we became engaged my Gran was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. I would have loved for her to have been with me to choose my dress as we always bonded over well made clothes but she was too unwell to join us.

Lorraine and Doreen made it possible for her to see me in my dress. This was so important to both myself, my mum and her, we knew she would not make our big day. I cannot put into words how heartbreaking that is/was to all concerned. The fact that she got to see me made everything slightly easier on the day, knowing that she loved it too.

And how about Michael’s outfit?

Michael had his kilt made over a year ago. The attention to detail and options he was given were amazing. Michael being very tall is a tricky customer but the outcome was amazing – the quality and fit is fantastic.

They even managed to source his family tartan which is quite rare we are told. They also offer a lifetime free service of cleaning and alteration if required. They also supplied hire outfits for some of the groomsmen and they looked great.

Tell us something surprising about your day…

My uncle had bought a pimp costume for a fancy dress party earlier in the year, he teased me that this was his outfit for the wedding. True to form, the band kicked off and out he came bedecked in a purple velour suit trimmed with leopard print finished with pair of gold shoes and a wide brimmed hat to match the suit. He turned a few heads and made my evening!
We were also piped in to dinner to the star wars theme tune, an ode to Michael’s childhood.

Any advice for future brides and grooms?

Everyone says it but it’s so true, enjoy every minute! It passes so quickly. Make sure you dance with each other at least twice, it means you can actually see you partner. Don’t let the little things bog you down and stress you out, do what you want.

Don’t worry if you’re great aunty three times removed disapproves it’s your day everyone is there for you and they should know you well enough to know what you like. your day should reflect you and your partner not the latest trends in weddings.

Why Scotland?

It’s a beautiful place and our home! We couldn’t imagine getting married abroad. All of our friends and family are here and we love the area in which we live. We wanted to celebrate this and make the most of the great scenery and produce our area provides.

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

It’s so unusual to have all your friends and family in the same place at the same time. As cheesy as it sounds, this was the best thing about our day and seeing everyone together having the most amazing time was truly unforgettable.

We love that Catherine’s Gran was able to see her in her dress. Such a special memory. Alie x
