Today we’re sharing the story of two best friends who fell in love, eloped, and spent their wedding budget on their dream honeymoon in Scotland! Heather and Rosemary were married in Orange County, Southern California in March, and celebrated afterwards at their favourite Mexican restaurant. When it came to their elopement shoot, they headed to their favourite European city and drew inspiration from Annie Leibovitz photographs, Carrie Bradshaw and all the glamorous queer performers who have inspired them. So. Much. To. Love!
How did you meet and fall in love?
We are the classic best friends that fell in love. We are each other’s biggest fans, favorite comedians, and inspiration. As queer women of mixed races with an age gap, there are so many reasons why we shouldn’t work as a couple. But love is bigger than all that.
As far as our engagement, we knew we were going to get married a few days into our relationship. Neither of us was willing to risk our friendship if it wasn’t real, and we both knew how real is was almost immediately.
We were together for a year and a half before we married but have been close friends for six years.
Our wedding day was inspired by…
So many things…. Annie Leibovitz photographs, Carrie Bradshaw’s Season 6 wardbrobe from Sex And The City, drag queens, Vogue magazine, burlesque costumes, and all the glamourous queer performers who have inspired us!
Tell us more about your photoshoot?
Once we knew we were going to elope and spend all of the money on our honeymoon, we started looking for our dream photographer. We scoured the internet for wedding photographers and chose our favorites before we even looked at prices. Marc Millar was by far our favorite, and we sent him an inquiry and decided if he was available to shoot a fantasy honeymoon shoot, we would go with him!
His photos are stunning and high drama, and we wanted over the top drama and fantasy! To our absolute delight, not only was Marc available – when we met him he was incredibly chill, personable, and kind. He drove us around from location to location and made us feel at ease, showed us some of the most beautiful parts of the city, and felt like an old friend.
Tell us something surprising about your day…
We were surprised by how many locations our photographer actually took us to – about 10 in total – and each was more breathtaking than the last.
Any advice for future brides/grooms?
Don’t feel like you have to do what you’ve seen everyone else do, dream up your own version of the perfect way to celebrate marrying the love of your life and go for it!
We love the looks you went for, tell us more!
We wanted high drama to match the beauty of Edinburgh so we just chose our fantasy dresses online and had them tailored. We both bought hats from a hat shop we came across in the Edinburgh Grassmarket called Fabhatrix. It was fab! We did our own hair and makeup.
We both have partial Scottish ancestry, but also we loved the history, scenery, and spirit of Scotland. We have always felt safe and welcomed in Edinburgh and it is our absolute favorite city in Europe!
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
Our photographer took us to a small castle surrounded by fields of daffodils and sheep, and it was magic. When we look at our faces in those pictures you can tell we can’t believe our eyes – and we are just genuinely happy and genuinely in awe of the magic of Scotland!
Marc was able to capture the magic of the trip perfectly. We will be forever grateful to him.
This has got to be one of my favourite love stories ever! Not going to lie, I had a tear in my eye reading what Heather and Rosemary have to say about Edinburgh. We’re sure you’ll join us in wishing them a lifetime of love and laughter. Christina x
