Nautical Scottish wedding

Nautical wedding Scotland - Ena May Photography -0001

Inspired by their love of the sea, Becky & James planned a nautical themed wedding in a house built for a smuggler on the Scottish coast! Packed with DIY details, including a wedding dress made by the bride, and the cutest flower girl (their gorgeous wee daughter), Becky & James’ wedding made us smile lots. So good, we just had to reshape for #ThrowbackThursday.

Who saw who first?

We met 10 years ago when I worked in James’ local bar in Edinburgh. We knew each other for years before I eventually gave him my mobile number. We went on a date and 10 years later we finally got married! Initially, neither of us wanted to get married but after having Lexie we were slowly coming round to the idea. He asked me to marry him while we were watching the sun coming up over the hills.
We were inspired by…
We both grew up living by the sea, I was brought up on the wild West Coast of Scotland and love the sea so that really formed our theme. We loved Gunsgreen House because it was by the sea and near to the harbour. We used the anchor motive throughout and pale blues were reflected in my corset, ribbons for the hand fastening and the flowers bringing everything together.
Being crafty, I made my own stationery, I kept it quite simple with postcards with the anchor motive bound with blue ribbon and a small anchor.

Although we have no connection to Eyemouth we chose Gunsgreen House because I grew up by the sea and it was a really interesting venue. It was one of the first venues we looked at and we loved it from day one. The house was built for a smuggler (John Nisbet) and has loads of wee nooks and crannies that make it a really unique place. They also don’t do a lot of weddings so we could make it really our own. We were able to stay in the house and the neighbouring tower for the whole weekend, which was great fun.
And something surprising about your day…
The day was full of coincedences, it turned out guests from different sides of our family and friends new each other which we didn’t know about and our first dance was Mission Desire by Jane Weaver, who coincidently one of my bridesmaids went to school with – we only discovered this after the wedding. We got a lovely message from Jane.
We hear you made your dress – how talented are you?!
The initial excitement of wedding dress shopping wore off really quickly, I didn’t find ‘the one’ and got very frustrated. I studied Fashion and Textiles at college so decided to put my (rusty) skills to good use. After playing around with a few ideas I went for a two piece with a boned corset made from pale blue coutil silk covered with ivory lace and a pearl detailing, and a long fitted silk skirt. I’d always had a hankering for a dress with a shorter skirt, so for the evening I made a big bouffy net skirt which was fab to dance in. Making my own dress meant I avoided the worries about it not fitting properly and as it was two pieces it wasn’t too stressful to make. It was also a lot cheaper to make than buy and I can wear the corset again!
I have short hair so I made a hair band using a piece of lace matching my corset which I covered with pearls.
My bridesmaids all used their own hair accessories, I gave them each a personalised bangle with their initial on that I found on Easy.
What did James go for?
James already had his kilt which is the McGregor tartan. He went to Caledonia in Peebles to get a new jacket which was less formal. He got his sporran from Centaur Design at Traquair House. Centaur Design also designed our wedding bands, both custom made for us. Using local suppliers as much as possible was really important to us.

Was choosing your photographer tricky?
I’ve known Becky from Ena May Photography since I moved to Innerleithen three years ago, and having seen her previous work she was the obvious choice! In the run up to the wedding she asked for lots of information and what pictures were must haves with family, etc. On the day she was brilliant! She made us feel so relaxed and where I usually hate having my picture taken, she made it really fun.
Tell us more about the music…
One of our best friends, David Paul Jones took my favourite song, Foo Fighters’ Everlong and did a piano arrangement of it for me to walk down the aisle to.
The evening reception was held in the cellars of the house so, as space was tight, we chose to have a DJ who was one of James’s friends. The first dance was Mission Desire by Jane Weaver, which is quite a slow song but one that we both love! By total coincidence, Jane Weaver went to school with one of my bridesmaids…
Any advice?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. if something doesn’t go quite to plan on the day then don’t worry, your guests won’t know any different.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
Having all our closest friends and famiily with us in a beautiful house with the sun shining! You couldn’t ask for anything more!
