Delicate spring tones, classy black and whites and lots of sparkle, set the tone for Jemma and Michael’s beautiful wedding. Be prepared to fall in love with everything about this wedding, especially Alfie…
How did you two meet?
We met at work around 10 years ago, but we didn’t get together officially until after I moved to another job about 3 years later. So we’ve been together for 7 years now.
And the proposal?
Michael proposed on the 5th anniversary of us being together. He completely surprised me with the engagement, I really wasn’t expecting it all! (I always imagined he would whisk me away to some romantic foreign destination so it wasn’t even on my radar), he took me out for a lovely meal and then we stopped off for some drinks at the Balmoral Hotel on the way home and he asked me to marry him!
We were inspired by…
Sparkles, glitter and elements of black and white. So we had sparkles and glitter anywhere we could!
The rooms were dressed in black and white, the bridesmaids were in black with white bouquets and I had a black and white bouquet.
We also wanted to have a strong family connection throughout so we included photographs of our grandparents on their wedding days which were displayed in the chapel and throughout the reception and as part of our ceremony we lit candles for our family who couldn’t be there.
Your flowers are so pretty. How did you fit them into your theme?
We were recommended Roseparks by Carberry and when I looked into their work I was really impressed. During our initial meeting with Lianne I felt really excited about what she could achieve for the budget that we had! Lianne is so passionate about her work and she really listened to my brief and gave me lots of ideas for what I could do.
I wanted my flowers to incorporate my theme which was black, white and diamonds and all my bouquets, button holes and centre pieces ended up incorporating the theme. I was so pleased with the end result! I was even able to have a black version of my fav flowers, lilies in my bouquet with sparkly diamontes! I really loved Lianne’s creations!
Tell us about your venue…
We were married at Carberry Tower near Musselburgh. This beautiful venue dates back to the 1500’s, and we chose it because we could have both our ceremony and reception there and it has a great mix of old and modern, and excellent flexibility in terms of the spaces you can utilise.
It really ticked all the boxes for us, we were married in the chapel onsite, then moved into their marquee for our wedding breakfast, and then back into the tower for our reception. The spaces worked really well, and we didn’t have to pause proceedings until rooms were re-set, it was pretty seamless. The events staff were so helpful and knowledgeable throughout, it felt like they couldn’t do enough for us, especially on the day. We love Carberry Tower, it will always be a special place for us and we hope to be able to return many times in the future!
How did you choose your photographer?
We met our photographers Ryan and Herculine at a wedding fair at Carberry. We had met many photographers in the months of planning leading up to our wedding, but none that we felt so relaxed around. From that initial meeting Hercs and Ryan felt more like friends, they are such genuine people. We had a look at some examples of their work at the fair and we were really blown away with their pictures.
Their personalities are really echoed in their work and none of the shots they take are overly posed or unnatural. We were able to leave the photo decisions up to them, the only thing we stipulated was that we wanted Alfie to be in the photos with us and Hercs and Ryan were so good at capturing him at the best moments, as well as being so patient with him (and us!) when he wasn’t looking the right way at the right time!
Our beautiful photos really are a testament to their skill, neither Michael or I were that comfortable behind the camera and with the added complication of trying to get Alfie in the shots, I was so pleased with the final results!
We love your dress Tell us more…
I knew I wanted a Sophia Tolli dress as I love her designs, so I went to a shop out of Edinburgh as I knew they stocked them, to try a few on. Sam was one of the first couple of dresses I tried on and I really fell in love with it! But, I wanted to make sure I had definitely seen and tried on as many different dresses as possible, so I decided to try Gwenne’s shop as its the closest dress shop to home.
My Mum gave Gwenne a call to see if she stocked any Sophia Tolli dresses but she explained that unfortunately she didn’t stock any in her Edinburgh shop. When Mum told her the story about how much I loved Sam, Gwenne very kindly agreed to get hold of one from her Broxburn shop and bring it through Edinburgh so that I could have a chance to try it again. When I tried Sam on again, I knew it was 100% the dress for me, I love it! I love the unique shape of the top and bodice, and all the sparkles. I LOVE sparkles! I really felt like a princess.
How about evening entertainment?
We decided not to have a wedding band, but instead have a DJ and have a disco with some ceilidh dances.
Our first dance was to “Falling in love with you”, we had originally planned to use the Elvis version, but ended up using a version by Haley Reinhart to be a bit different.
We had taken some lessons with Learn to Wedding Dance in advance, which really helped to reduce the nerves on the night!
Tell us something surprising about your day…
Our French Bulldog Alfie was brought along to us by his dog walker Joanne so that he could be in our photographs and be part of the day too. It was so sweet, when we were walking out of the chapel after our ceremony, he was waiting at the end of the path for us with a lucky horseshoe around his neck!
Make sure you set a budget before you start looking at any suppliers, and try your best to stick to it!
But be realistic – it’s so easy to get carried away with whats out there once you start looking for ideas and I found many things were more expensive that I expected.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
We just absolutely loved how everything turned out on the day! It sounds cliched, but we honestly wouldn’t have made any changes to how the day went as a whole.
I was so blown away by the fact that what I had in my head, in terms of the how each of the areas at Carberry (chapel, marquee and reception) would look, came to life just as I had imagined!
That was down to many hours of planning and organising, but also our wedding planner at Carberry who went the extra mile for us, and our fab events company, Make Believe who did such a fantastic job dressing the reception room in particular. It was everything I wanted and more.
It really was the best day of our lives!
So much pretty in this wedding, but we already have a special place in our hearts of Alfie. How about you? Alie x
