The adventures continue for Jillian and Matt as they moved themselves 6 hours north. Their days have been filled with building Ikea furniture, helping the cats to adjust to their new surroundings and more than a little wedding dreaming…
“This has certainly been the busiest month so far! We had 2 bridal showers, and Matt and I moved 6 hours north! The fun has only just started though, as this coming month promises to be equally adventurous.
“My first bridal shower was thrown by Matt’s mom and 2 of my bridesmaids, and it including everyone in Southern California. I had completely forgotten that I told my bridesmaids that I love purple and sunflowers, so I was pretty surprised when I showed up and the house was decorated with adorable purple banners and lovely flower arrangements. I guess it can be a good thing to be forgetful!
“Because Matt and I love travelling, one of my bridesmaids had the fantastic idea to incorporate it into a game. She printed out 8 pictures of either places we’ve been, or places we’ll be going on our Epic Moon, and she had everyone guess. One person actually got 7 of the 8 correct, and I was pretty impressed!
“We also played “The Newlywed Game”, where Matt and I had to try to answer some questions the same way. They would ask me a question, I would answer, and then we would watch Matt’s pre-recorded answer. The guests were a bit surprised at how specifically our answers matched, but I just say that’s good communication! I hope the guests had a good time – because I sure did!.
“The next weekend I flew up to Northern California for the bridal shower thrown by my mom for everyone that’s up there. My family lives near San Francisco, and with one sister having a newborn, and the other still in grad school, they were very thankful to have any opportunity to attend a shower a bit closer to home. There were no games at this one, but it was full of people I hadn’t seen in quite some time, so it was kind of nice to just have a chance to chat. My mom also put together some lovely decorations, and she even ordered Harry Potter cookies for dessert!
“The rest of the last 2 weeks has been filled with packing, packing, packing! We didn’t have a very big house in Southern California, but we do have years of accumulated things from two people, so packing took a while! We committed to doing at least one box a day for about 3-4 weeks, so that meant that everything was more or less packed up by the time moving day arrived. We were also lucky that we didn’t have to complete empty out the house, as Matt’s brother and 2 other friends will be living there in our place.
“We hired movers for the first time for this move, and that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! It definitely took the stress off of the day, as I was already panicking about transporting my two cats in a 6 hour car ride. I did insist on transporting my wedding dress, shoes, veil, and other accessories in our own car – I’m not dealing with having to replace those now!
“But we’ve made it, and now our days are filled with building Ikea furniture and trying to help our little kitties adjust to a new place (they’re doing pretty well). I’m very happy that I’ve taken care of so much of the wedding planning a bit early, as my free time is pretty limited right now! We head out for a cruise to the Caribbean on Saturday, and we can’t wait!”
How fantastic (and slightly crazy) does the packing look? Sound advice on hiring movers we reckon! Alie x
Jillian has fallen in love with the idea of marrying fiance, Matt in a Scottish castle. They are based in Orange County, California and are planning their destination wedding for September this year. Jillian loves Scotland because “you can have a beautiful, romantic wedding, but it’s also a little badass!”
