Winter country club wedding

It was love at first sight when Natalie and Alan first met on a night out with friends. Ten years later, their Edinburgh winter wedding was full of their favourite things – music, fun, friends and family. And their unusual wedding transport (driven by the groom) raised a few smiles too. Enjoy their beautiful day…

Love at first sight or gradual attraction?

We met over 10 years ago on a night out with friends. It was love at first sight and we went on our first date a few weeks later. We’ve been through exams, new jobs, bought a house together and adopted a cat, not to mention going on a lot of holidays.

During a holiday to Tenerife in 2015, Alan got down on one knee and proposed to me with a beautiful poem, which we included as part of our wedding ceremony. It was completely unexpected, but I was the happiest person alive that day.

We were inspired by…

Music, fun, friends and family. I made our own table plans from tickets of gigs we had been to together. We also put on our own sweet shop with retro sweets to remind us of our childhood days!

We Fell In love gave us great inspiration for what we wanted (and didn’t want) for our big day.

Tell us about your venue…

We had never been to the Dalmahoy, but knew it was the venue for us as soon as we drove up the long, winding driveway to the “big hoose”. The right mix of old and new, cosy and modern, set amongst stunning grounds. The staff were wonderful every time we went to visit and we never once worried about anything as we knew our amazing wedding co-ordinator, Emma, had everything under control.

Your photos are beautiful! Tell us more…

We both loved Eve’s style of story-telling, original, fine art photography. We absolutely love our wedding photos and are so glad we picked her. It felt like having an old friend at our wedding and we had such fun with her, especially on the golf buggy Alan drove us around the estate on. Luckily we made it back in one piece (especially after dodging a few golf balls)!

How did dress shopping go?

I bought the first dress I tried on in the first shop I went to. I started at one end of the shop and had discounted about 30 dresses, when my step-mum pulled out a dress from the other side of the shop and I loved it. I tried on others to make sure, but the simple, elegant style with a lot of sparkle was just perfect for me. I knew it was the one as soon as I tried it on.

The girls at Kavelle were excellent and even stayed late one Saturday night to carry out some last minute alterations on it.

And what about the groom?

Alan chose Schiehallion tartan for his kilt, which is Nicol’s own tartan. It fitted in perfectly with our colour scheme. The wedding party all loved wearing it.

Slow shuffle or big number?

We chose Can’t Stop Loving You by Van Halen as we wanted something a bit rocky and different, but that we could still dance to. Our band, The Lockhearts, did a perfect rendition of the song. We had so many compliments about the band. Alex, the singer, also played at our ceremony and during the drinks reception. We couldn’t have picked a better band, the dance floor was packed all night long!

Tell us something surprising about your day…

We had a minor panic at the wedding breakfast when Alan thought he’d lost his speech. He was frantically emptying the contents of his sporran when he realised it was in his jacket pocket the whole time!

Any advice?

Planning a wedding is stressful. There are times when you will want to cancel, relationships will be tested and you will question whether you really need to spend money on something for one day. It is so worth all of it and we wouldn’t change a thing.

Make the most of every minute of your wedding day. To be surrounded by all of your loved ones, with everyone having a great time, is the best feeling ever.

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

It’s too hard to pick one aspect. The whole day was unforgettable and neither of us stopped grinning from ear to ear.

I love all the sparkle and Natalie’s gorgeous ‘something borrowed’! Who else is planning a winter wedding? Christina x
