Engagement Shoot

by Karolina Kotkiewicz Photography

Edinburgh-Scotland

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… and we couldn’t resist revisiting this breathtakingly beautiful shoot for today’s #ThrowbackThursday post. Inspired by a romantic winter stroll around Edinburgh, with a few favourite party spots thrown in for good measure, this e-shoot has us longing for hot mugs of Firepunch and wooly jumpers.

How did you meet?
We met at work over six years ago and became friends pretty quickly. We used to go for walks together in our lunch break and spent a year getting to know each other before we had our first official date, which was a weekend away with all of Stephen’s friends for a birthday celebration. Talk about straight in at the deep end! It was a brilliant weekend/first date, with lots of great memories and photos.
Where and when did the proposal happen?
In our flat on the 23rd Dec 2012. Apparently Steve was going to propose on the North Bridge, Edinburgh after a meal we had booked on Christmas Eve but he couldn’t wait that long, the nerves were too much. He made a surprise proposal by editing a boxset DVD to make me think we were just going to watch TV. Instead after a few minutes the TV went blank and words started appearing on the screen. I wont divulge everything that was written but the last screen obviously said, “Will you marry me?” He got down on one knee in front of me and produced the ring. After lots of happy tears (from me, obviously) we popped open some bubbly and then went for a walk up the Royal Mile right up to Edinburgh Castle. It was about 10pm by this time and we looked out over the city with all the Christmas lights. We also spat on the Heart of Midlothian for good luck. TMI?

Was it a surprise?
Completely… I have never been so shocked in my life! We kept it a secret until Christmas day, where we got to see and tell both our families. They couldn’t have been less shocked. I kept saying, “Am I the only person that didn’t see this coming?”. I don’t normally miss a trick so he did well to keep it a total surprise.
Tell us a bit about your engagement shoot – why did you pick those locations?
We wanted our engagement shoot to reflect our lives in Edinburgh and the time of year we got engaged. We have spent so many special times together at the Christmas market drinking Fire Punch (mulled rum) and on walks around Arthur’s Seat in the summer. We also had some photos taken on our roof terrace where we have had lots of parties and, of course, we had to have some photos taken at Edinburgh Castle. All the locations meant something to us and are a great contrast to what our wedding photos will look like.
And what about the big day itself?
We are getting married on the Greek Island of Rhodes where we holidayed three years ago. It was our second ever holiday abroad together and we absolutely loved it. We have 50 friends and family flying over for a week to join in our wedding and post wedding celebrations. Our ceremony is in a beautiful white dome building, covered in flowers, that overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. Our reception is in a walled garden restaurant in Rhodes Old Town. We fly in less than four months and cannot wait! It will be the wedding and also holiday of a lifetime with people we love!
