Wedding anniversary

gift ideas

It seems like just a short while ago you were deliberating over place names, and suddenly your first anniversary is looming. How exactly did that happen? To help, we’ve put together a few ideas for anniversary gift ideas for the first five – very happy! – years.

The first wedding anniversary is traditionally celebrated with a paper gift. And while it may be hard to find something in Tiffany’s to fit the bill, how about these quirky ideas instead? Main image, papercut artwork by Emily Hogarth; top right, paper lantern fairy lights from Curiouser & Curiouser; bottom right, record your travels together with a scratch off world map, available from Not on the High Street. Other ideas are tickets to see a favourite band, a magazine subscription, a first edition of a favourite book, or a plane ticket for a second honeymoon, if you’re feeling a little bit flush.

It gets a little tricksy in year two, with cotton the gift of choice. We love these bright cotton ball string lights, available at Not on the High Street. Or how about choosing a cotton bag (asos.com have lots of great designs to choose from) and filling it with treats? And for the five star hotel experience, at home, a personalised luxury bath robe from The Fine Cotton Company does the trick. You could also shop for a stylish t-shirt or the perfect jeans, or some new sheets and bedding to give your bedroom a hotel room look.

Year three and things get spiced up as leather enters the mix. For a subtle hint to your hubbie, save this leather biker jacket by Whistles as your desktop wallpaper. And you could always treat him to a Paul Smith Tri-tone saffiano leather wallet as a thank you. Both available at Harvey Nichols. Other ideas include a leather bound travel journal, a gorgeous hand (or man) bag and a designer chair for your loved one’s desk.

Four years in and we in the UK celebrate with fruit and flowers, while our friends in North America hit up the linen and silk. We’re thinking grapes are a fruit, so wine is allowed – right? A special bottle with a personalised stopper (like this one by Highland Angel) would go down a treat. Or how about this fruit basket, complete with a cheeky bottle of Champagne, from Fortnum & Mason? And you can never go wrong with a beautiful bunch of fresh flowers from your local florist.

Year five, and while you might think you deserve a medal (just kidding!), you’re actually entitled to a bit of wood. But don’t be too disheartened, just look at what we found! You can’t get more romantic than your initials carved in a tree. To avoid environmental damage and a subsequent embarrassing arrest, the team at When I was a Kid will undertake this project on your behalf, delivering the result to your door. Or how about a wooden sign? We love this one by Coulson Macleod. Here’s to the next five years!
Feeling inspired? If you are celebrating your wedding anniversary soon, we’d love to hear what you have planned. Christina x
