It’s the one we’ve all been waiting for! On a crisp, bright winter’s day, Lois & Matthew became husband and wife, just 13 weeks after winning their fairytale wedding with We Fell In Love. Here’s their wedding story…
Love at first sight or gradual attraction?
For me it was a bit of both! When I walked into the room and met Matthew for the first time, I thought he was absolutely gorgeous. Soon after we started dating, we both fell in love very quickly.
We were inspired by…
Family and Scotland. We are both very patriotic and wanted Scotland to be a prominent feature in our day. I have always had a huge love of tartan and with it being such a hot trend this season, it made me want to incorporate it even more.
We are all about our family and wanted it to be an amazing day for everyone from our little boy who is 8 months-old to our elderly guests.
How did it feel to win the We Fell In Love Fairytale Wedding?
It was the most amazing and surreal experience in the world! We still couldn’t believe that we won until the actual wedding day. It was a whirlwind of madness for the 13 weeks we had to plan it. I have never been so surprised in my life. Things like winning big prizes just don’t happen to people like us. We couldn’t have been more happy and felt more blessed.
Was it tricky planning a wedding in just 13 weeks?
It had its good and bad points. The bad points were my stress levels! I am such a worrier and spent a lot of time panicking that we wouldn’t manage to plan it in time and I had a lot of weird wedding dreams!! On the good side, I was so much more impulsive and didn’t spend time sweating the small stuff. We made decisions quickly and moved on instead of to-ing and fro-ing on things. I loved planning the wedding in such a short space of time, it’s so different to what it would usually be like!
What were your first impressions of Drumtochty Castle?
Breathtaking!! It was absolutely stunning. When we drove up to the castle for the first time I had tears in my eyes. It was a fairytale for us to be able to get married in a castle. The whole castle is so beautiful and Ewan and his team were absolutely amazing. It is one of the best locations in Scotland to get married!
We absolutely love your dress! Tell us more about how it was made…
Thank you! We went down to Edinburgh four times all together over the course of the 13 weeks, for dress fittings etc. At the first appointment, Mette from Freja Designer Dressmaking and I chatted about designs, ideas and materials, and she also measured me. At the second fitting, she had made a mock dress for me to try on and make sure it was the style and size for me. We had so much fun while I was down, Mette was absolutely brilliant and so funny!
The next time I went down Mette had made my dress and it was nearly finished. As soon as I saw the dress I fell In love, it was exactly what I had envisaged and was my beautiful perfect princess dress. Mette then just had to make a few alterations and had to add the lace to the bodice.
At my fourth appointment with Mette, my dress was ready for me try on and when I did my bridesmaid and I were crying – it was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen! It was such a special moment! I got to take the dress home with me that day.
What did you enjoy most about the wedding planning?
I absolutely loved getting parcels in the post every day and watching all the little bits and pieces coming together. I can’t really get into town to go shopping very often, because my daughter isn’t like her mummy and doesn’t like shopping!! We also loved getting to meet all the suppliers of the prizes and really feel like we have made some new friends that we would like to keep in touch with after the wedding. I liked being impulsive because it’s not really what I’m normally like and I loved writing lists all the time, because they were so helpful and I do love a list!
How did the kids enjoy the day?
The kids had a total ball! Spencer was a bit oblivious to it all, but he is only 8 months-old. I’m sure he will love looking back in the years to come and seeing himself in his wee kilt! Autumn loved running about in the castle and was so good all day, apart from when she heard the bagpipes. She was a little scared. She helped us celebrate by dancing into the wee hours!! Kennedy thoroughly enjoyed it and has spoken of nothing else since!! She told all her friends at school and showed her class some photos from the wedding. She thinks she’s a princess because we got married at a castle. I told her that she was already a princess before we got married!
Was it all as you’d imagined it would be?
It was all we imagined and more. Perfection is the only way I could describe it.
Favourite part of the day?
Lois: Walking down the aisle to see all my favourite people in one room, wearing the best dress ever, to celebrate our love to one another.
Matthew: Seeing Lois walking down the aisle. I knew she would look beautiful and I was crying before I even turned around to see her. She looked so beautiful and it’s a moment I will never forget.
What was on your wedding menu?
Starter – Roasted squash, carrot and ginger soup with sage oil; Main – Roasted ribeye of scotch beef, thyme and garlic fondant potato, confit tomato, spinach forestiere house butter; Dessert – Classic sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
Did anything funny happen?
Well, just as I was about to walk into the church, one of my bridesmaids said to me – “Oh no Lois, where is your veil?” In my haste to get ready, I had hung it up and forgotten to put it on. It was too late though as we were just about to enter the church. Not sure if it was funny but if I didn’t laugh I would’ve cried!!! A funny thing that did happen was our grand march turned into a conga and Ewan’s face was absolutely hilarious!!! Ha ha ha.
First dance – sedate shuffle or throwing shapes around the dancefloor?
Throwing shapes about to the grand march/conga, followed by a sedate shuffle to Tom Odell’s Grow Old With Me. I just wanted to hold my new husband close and never let go!
We’ve heard a rumour about a post-wedding PJ party – spill the beans!
After the band and the guests that weren’t staying in the castle left, we cracked open more bubbly and jumped in the hot tub, which was amazing after a day in heels and a snuggly fitting dress. We stayed in the hot tub for hours and were a little bit tipsy to say the least!! Ha ha ha.
We loved the film trailer by Cherry Tree – what was it like watching it for the first time?
It was emotional!! As you probably guessed from the blog posts I am a very emotional person and when we watched it, I cried my eyes out. Cherry Tree have captured our family so beautifully in just one-and-a-half minutes. It was absolutely stunning and gave me goosebumps. We have watched the video over and over, and everytime I still have a wee tear in my eyes. The children absolutely love watching it and Autumn narrates through it – Mummy, daddy, mama, dees, daddy, mama, dada, mummy! He he he!!
What’s the next adventure now you’re married?
Our next adventure is to enjoy our lives with our babies and savour every moment and watch them grow up. We are so lucky to own our own house, have our children and now we can call each other husband and wife. We are truly blessed.
What will you never forget about your big day?
How lucky we were to win such an amazing prize. How blessed we are to have such amazing friends and family to spend our day with. My husband’s face when I walked in. How gorgeous our babies looked in their outfits. Laughs, tears and promises. It was all so memorable and I wish we could live it all over again tomorrow.
Ahhhh, I’m sitting here bubbling now thinking about it all! It was perfect. Thank you so much to everyone at We Fell In Love for making our dreams come true. We are eternally grateful. xxxx.
What an incredible journey it has been! From taking a chance and entering a competition, to becoming husband and wife in true fairytale style in just a matter of weeks. We hope you have enjoyed following Lois & Matthew’s #WFILwedding story.
