Top five

world Festivals

For a truly unforgettable honeymoon, why not check out one of the world’s greatest festivals? From revelling in Rio to chilling with jazz on the shores of Lake Geneva, here are our top five picks…

For the biggest, and arguably best street party, head to Brazil. Each year Rio de Janeiro plays host to a Carnival full of colour, atmosphere and Brazilian beats. Brush up on your samba steps before you go and prepare to party like never before.

Next year’s Carnaval runs from February 28th to March 4th 2014. See more info at RioCarnival.net

Held annually in Italy, the Carnival of Venice is full of theatre, music and incredible sights. If you’ve always fancied the chance to don a weird or wonderful Venetian mask and attend a masquerade ball, then this is the festival for you.

The 2014 Carnival of Venice takes place from February 15th to March 4th. Full details on the official site here.

Fancy something fun, different and very messy? Try La Tomatina! Held in the Valencian town of Buñol, the hour-long fruit fight sees participants pelt each other with crushed tomatoes. If you plan to go in for battle, prepare yourself by investing in goggles.

Entry is limited, for details on how to sign up for the August 27th 2014 event go here.

For something a little more sophisticated, head to Switzerland next July, for the Montreux Jazz Festival. Set on the lake Geneva shoreline, the event is the second largest annual jazz festival in the world (after Canada’s Montreal International Jazz Festival). Founded in 1967, its stages have been graced by music greats inclduing Miles Davis, Ray Charles, David Bowie and Prince.

Montreux Jazz Festival is due to run from July 4th to 19th 2014.

The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is a showcase of the latest progressions in the skiing and snowboarding world. Combining Canada’s largest free outdoor concert series with extreme sports, spring snow conditions, and burn-the-candle nightlife, it’s a celebration of everything that’s core to mountain culture.

Whistler World Ski & Snowboard Festival is due to take place from April 11th – 20th 2014.

Rio has been top of my travel wish list for some time, and it’s now been joined by the Carnival of Venice. Which festival tickles your fancy? Christina x
