Enchanted forest

What happens when a creative team including a florist, a designer dressmaker and a couture embroiderer get together to bring a forest fantasy to life? Something very magical indeed.

Where did the idea for this creative shoot stem from?
Mette Baillie of Freja Designer Dressmaking: “It was originally the photographer – Jay, from Elemental – who had the idea for the forest shoot. He had a specific idea about the type of forest, with darkness, gnarly roots, and some wild, untouchable feel about it. He approached myself and Gemma from Planet Flowers with the idea. We then thought of Lucy of Twig Design, who has a background in couture embroidery. We share the same ideas on style and find it very exciting to bounce ideas off each other. We all work with quite simple designs, where the detailing comes from textures and materials.
“The idea was that the model should be part of the forest, and almost come from within the forest. We loved the idea, and we wanted to use materials that would naturally be found in a forest for the dresses and accessories. Make-up artist Rosie Fraser was immediately on the same wavelength and keen to be involved. Everything came together beautifully in the end.”
The green dress looks like a wearable work of art! How did you go about making it?
Mette: “The green dress was made from bol moss, which was attached to a frame we constructed. Gemma worked her magic, using different techniques to attach the leaves and moss – the leaves were oleaster and cyclamen leaves were used for the bust. The headdress and flowers featured black berries (ligustro).”
And we love the fresh, floaty feel of the nude dress. What inspired it?
Mette: “We made a chiffon dress in a nude colour to represent the naked feel the first spring flowers have. Lucy embroidered the dress in a dark earth colour shade. On top of the embroidery we attached fresh flower heads (ornithogalum). The outfit was finished off with snowberry and twig details, and a headdress of wax flower and ornithogalum.
Are there any other creative projects you would like to work together on in the future?
Mette: “The nature of our businesses means that, so far, we have only worked together on private events, mainly weddings, and also birthday parties. We would love to work together more. In the future we would love to style outfits for waiters and performers for bigger events, where Planet Flowers would do the event styling.”
We love the creativity and skill that has gone into designing and making these floral & foliage dresses – the shapes, textures and colours are incredible! We’d love to hear your thoughts. And is anyone now tempted to rock a floral frock down the aisle?
