We Fell In Love With

Rachel Scott Couture

Well-known for its quirky and creative window displays, Rachel Scott Couture is a treasure trove of the finest designer wedding gowns. Based on Dundas Street in the capital’s New Town, it specialises in designers who focus on simple but high quality tailoring and celebrate individual style. We caught up with owner, Rachel who tells us how she spotted a gap in the bridal retail market and fills us in on the latest wedding dress trends.

How did you get into retail and bridal couture?
It was actually when my mum got remarried some years back now that I noticed there was a gap in the market for high quality, unique wedding gowns. I adore designers that focus on simple but exquisitely executed tailoring to give an elegant and sophisticated frame to a bride on her wedding day. I wanted to be able to offer brides something a little bit different from the mainstream – unusual fabrics, textures or details, but without compromising on quality of construction. I can’t believe I’ve been running Rachel Scott Couture for eight years now!
What do you love most about it?
The type of bride who like our collections tend to be looking for something a bit different and often have initial concerns that they might not find a wedding dress that truly reflects their personality. I offer advice and inspiration in an environment where a bride can experiment and play with her individual style. There is nothing more satisfying for me than seeing a bride’s face light up when you’ve shown her that she can get a look that makes her feel like a bride, while still reflecting her as a person.

And what’s been the highlight so far?
Winning The Best Bridal Retailer in the North of the UK award at this year’s Bridal Buyer Awards was an amazing achievement! We were delighted to have even got to the final six, as the award covers the whole of the UK, so there are a lot of other good retailers in the running. To find out that we had won felt fantastic. I know that the personal service I offer to each of my clients and the styling of my business is very unique in the wedding industry, so to know that others are enjoying and appreciating it too felt very satisfying.
Which new trends are you seeing?
There’s lots of texture coming through in the fabrics I see clients choosing, gruipure lace or raw silks, for example, but always with a focus on classic lines to act as a base. Cover-ups are very in vogue for next season, whether they made in lace, organza or even little softly draped cap sleeves. I’m also seeing more clients opting for a full length veils but styled without much in the way of detailing, simply something soft and romantic.

What’s your favourite thing about the Scottish wedding scene?
We have an amazing range of wedding service providers in Scotland, from unique venues, bands or photographers to cake designers and firework companies! I think what really makes me proud to be part of the Scottish wedding scene though, is our reputation for being friendly, welcoming and flexible to our clients’ individual needs. As a nation we are passionate people and no-where is this more evident than in the wedding industry where there’s an enthusiasm and excitement towards each client’s wedding that I adore. I believe that’s why we have so many couples choosing to marry in Scotland, you know that your wedding suppliers will settle for nothing less that a perfect party!
What/who inspires you?
I’m inspired by passionate people, it doesn’t matter what they’re passionate about, just that they have something that motivates them. It’s the excitement in someone’s eyes when they talk about a subject they love that I find totally infectious. I love people who do things differently and I love people who are open to trying new things or doing new things. My children are probably my biggest inspiration though, nothing drives you on more than wanting to make your family proud!

If you weren’t selling beautiful dresses you’d be?
Even the thought of not being able to work with such brilliant designers and their beautiful dresses makes me shiver! I think, if I wasn’t doing this job though, I’d have to be in a job that still allowed me to use the creativity and passion that I bring to work everyday at the moment. I couldn’t bear the thought of not having the job satisfaction that I have now.
On a rare day off we’ll find you where?
Enjoying coffee and cake with my husband and our two boys is absolute bliss. You can never underestimate the simple pleasure that an Americano, a chocolate cup cake and fabulous chit chat with the family can bring.
